Is it illegal to register these type of domains?

I wouldn't register these. Big companies are really sensitive when it comes to trademarks and domain names, so in any case your domain can be dropped due to TM issues. anything *trademark*.*** is potentially violation of TM.

Unfortunately it's all about registrars. Even if it is not Andrew, some of the other snakes will take it. Snapnames are extremely efficient these days grabbing everything that was on backorder auctions @ NameJet. Like this one: http://www.domainsofvalue.com - a frekin registrar made only to Snap...
