legal Domain Front Running by Lumis.com

Well, since you ask: Imagine that I have a business, and I've obtained a domain name for it. Let's call it my.cooltld. I'm in the early stages of building up the business and the brand. Then someone announces on the Internet that "if you're interested in obtaining the domain my.cooltld, we can...

opinion What Does The Domain World Need? (That we don't have now)

What CS85 already said. I would call it a "domain search engine". At the moment, potential domain buyers have two main approaches to finding a suitable domain name. Either think up a name themselves, then look around to see whether it's available for sale; or wade through vast lists of...

discuss Now the price increase for .com is starting to hit...going to be dropping lots of names

Yes, if you not only own the domain but also intend to keep it for five or ten years. For the end user with a website, and for some domainers' monetization models (including yours, if I'm not mistaken), that might indeed be worth seriously considering. If a domainer is simply intending to sell...

    analysis World War III

Oldtimer, I've done what you're doing now. Registered domains with topical names relating to my main business; built websites on them (not just 301 redirects!) to make a point; casually drop the URL in at the end of a post in an online forum. In fact, in a sense, that's how I got into...

alert Wow, pretty amazing .xyz scam?

Besides being a clickbait title, it's practically an invitation to receive mail from the register company's lawyers.

poll How many domainers in the world?

I tried once, but he managed to jump back on the sidewalk in time. OK, seriously… As redemo has now figured out, 90% of the question is "what's the definition of the word domainer?" To which the answer is: there isn't one (there are lots of definitions). I can think of two acquaintances who...

discuss Now the price increase for .com is starting to hit...going to be dropping lots of names

I don't disagree with any of that. But: the people/businesses (outside the US) that you're describing now aren't those for whom an annual .com reg fee of $20 is a deal-breaker. Or if they are, they're not typical.

discuss Now the price increase for .com is starting to hit...going to be dropping lots of names

Not really. $20 isn't serious money, even in poor countries – not for a business that is operating internationally and therefore needs, or feels it needs, a .com domain. For the rest, there are ccTLDs (and many people regard .com as a de facto American TLD, not an international one). And this...

poll How many domainers in the world?

I don't think there's a clear consensus on a definition of "domainer". Personally, I wouldn't call buying or registering a domain with a view to doing nothing with it and selling it at some point for a profit "investing". I'd call it speculating. For what it's worth, Wikipedia's "Domainer"...

information A Value-Added Approach To Domain Names

Thanks for that post, eyedomainous. When I began investigating domaining as a source of income, I was staggered to discover that around half of all registered domains are just being warehoused in the hope of a sale. Also to experience this first hand: whenever I had an idea for a domain name...

discuss Do registrars have a role to play in extension's popularity?

I checked this out. I went over to godaddy.com and I entered a domain name: shay2aeCoo7Phia6caeDah2n.xyz (I couldn't think of a better one, so I let my password generator choose it.) GoDaddy then showed me the availability of this domain. And also of the same name in .com, i.e...

discuss Does having .com and .net and .org help sell a domain?

I'm also interested in listing packages of domains for sale. On DAN (the only platform I've used so far), I've resolved this by listing only one domain in the package for sale, and indicating the other domains in the description text field for that one package. I was wondering whether it was...

Is that another way of saying: No one has much use for them, but they can be pumped and dumped?

A quote from BILL GATES on the domain industry!

Whoever said it, the assertion is fundamentally flawed: domains aren't commodities. And one of the most common errors in the domain business is to treat them as commodities.

    DAN.COM Domain Marketplace (Official Thread)

It's not in DAN's interests for buyers to contact sellers before they have committed to purchase. It makes it too easy for buyer and seller to agree a sale outside DAN. DAN loses its commission in that case, even though buyer and seller initially made contact through DAN. It's inconvenient. I...
