Devs simply have to go out and develop whatever name comes/ fits best to their idea. As there are legit meta websites, it's wrong to say you cannot have/dev meta domains. Reality shows that the worries are not justified. Simple as that.

question DAN vs. Afternic, which is better?

Isn't it strange. We have the godaddy/DAN merge since some months now, and still one have to manually list domains there and here... instead of having the option of syncing. (Additionally, they should add some possibility to *easily* auctionize confirmed domains).
