$1500 sounds fair, but take in consideration that if the product does not somehow refer to something related to gadgets or tech, it may be harder to convince a person about its value.

About GoDaddy closeouts ,,

No worries, it takes 8 days to get the domain in your account. And also, an extra care, until the domain name is not in your account, it can be still renewed by the current owner and get it back in his account. If this happen, you'll be refunded thought :)

Good investment?

Even more than a great buy, be sure that is not a great fraud. Make your due diligence on why it has a so catchy price. Maybe ask him to use escrow? Check the recent nameservers/whois data change? I'd say it is a good buy as general recommendation.

What you can do is to learn directly from the buyer. I would try to be polite and simply ask him something like this: This is your last chance to learn directly from him why he backed out. This is all I would try to do at this point :)

I think that the fastest way of cashing in your assets is to auction them at flippa, namejet, godaddy, namepros etc, whichever fits them best. The other method, your domain investors buddies or past clients who bought from you. Try and see if any of them are interested into buy some. :)

Domain purchased from closeout is now GONE?

It was probably renewed on Godaddy by the owner, and you will be refunded for the amount if that is the case.
