Will Registrars bans or deletes "hate" domain names in the future?

  • This poll is still running and the standings may change.
  • This poll is still running and the standings may change.

Since 2016, the political climate around the world has become polarized. Many tech companies started banning and deplatforming users, recently the US president.

Will other tech companies such as registrars conform to this policy?

Have an agreed list of names, phrases etc that are defined as "hateful" and then block them from being used........I would like to say simple......but with the amount of bloody bureaucracy, invested interests and polarised opinions in the world today such a supposedly simple course of action probably won't happen.....

Just needs a bit of common sense when it comes to what is truly hateful instead of mean, hurtful or perceived as offensive which makes the job a lot harder........

Also a word can be used in a hateful manner when used by a person and if another uses it then it can be acceptable depending on cultural differences.....but there are certain phrases, terms, words that should be easily identifiable as hateful still........you would like to think

Sooooo not bloody simple at all

Think it could start to happen in the future, but when you have certain registrars that promote free speech at whatever the cost then it might not become universally accepted unless it is set by ICAAN and all other relevant bodies - which if it ever happened could take years and years and few more on top of that.......

Names? :bored: oh, domain names?

I thought you meant names of people then for a second!

I personally don't understand why you'd want to stop any name from being used, cause it might be used positively.

Even if it wasn't, as long as it's not illegal content (and I don't include offensive in that) then who cares. Nobody can stop speech, it doesn't matter how hard you try and if you tried that hard we've got serious issues. You have the stasi.

Illegal content can and is being created on any domain, very hard, if not impossible to stop that but there are mechanisms in place that can stop domains being made available.......

As an example - One area of domains that we could all (hopefully) agree on being banned is to do with child pornography and all associated search phrases that have harmful intent - it is not about stifling free speech, it is about terms/domains that can be universally accepted as hateful/illegal - though if someone is a paedophile then it won't be "universally" accepted......

Now there are many positives of writing about the harmful impact on the above and people sharing their experiences so others come forward and charities, blogs, companies working in this space can/are using domains that are not hateful.....

Boils down to the intent of the phrase, term & domain which is why I said it is not simple......

I still think that any subject, even the aforementioned could direct people to an awareness campaign, so even that example doesn't quite stand the test if you ask me...

I'd imagine that people that want to host that kinda stuff aren't hosting it on a domain that makes it obvious.

I can see that you're not coming at this from a negative place, I think we both want what's good in the world, but I can't think of an example that can't be turned round and used in a good way.

Like you said policing content is difficult, so banning words is just pointless and overreach imho because it's assuming the intent of the use of the domain before it's been used.

I mean... What's hosted on the EMD for the aforementioned subject? I don't dare to type it in

This is what I mean we are just discussing it and it's like a rabbit hole - we could just keep going down it with no agreement reached even though the intentions are good - now imagine this happening at a decision making level :dead: - nothing will ever get accomplished .....

And there is no way in hell I would type in any of the EMD's or search terms to see how they are being used - most of them will be being tracked by some government agencies, vigilante organisations etc etc - I'm not going on their radar :xf.smile:

Guys you got this whole Hate thing all wrong,

This is not about hurting someone's feelings,

This is about the kind of speech that puts people's lives, wellbeing, and livelihood in danger.

The kind of speech (or expression) that makes a person (or a certain group of people) fear for their lives or that makes someone feel insecure or unsafe at work, or that encourages others to chase a certain family out of the neighborhood.

Hateful speech that promotes and ends in Hate Crimes is the issue here not that you made fun of someone's beer belly.

IMO

Being a domainer at heart and as someone who likes to think of himself as a Human Rights and Environmental activist and intellectual I just registered:

HatefulSpeech.com

and

HatefulSpeech.org

Modest. Cause these things could never be mutually exclusive... right? :hungry::woot:

You better not be putting hateful speech on those domains.

Do I sense a little hate coming from you here,

Why not think a little more positive about what I am going to do with these domains like creating awareness and preventing Hateful Speech.

IMO

No hate (or hate speech, for that matter) coming from these quarters. You did however just make the exact same point that I have already made in this thread .

The point is that although you have the right to think negatively if you want and that I might not be able to change your ways, but I wish that you had looked at the positive potentials that these domains have in creating awareness around the issue of Hateful Speech.

I'm sorry but you're missing my point entirely regarding the domain, I'm making the point that you can and should be able to register any domain that you want and that the domain itself doesn't dictate the use.

The only thing I poked fun at was your lack of modesty re being an "intellectual" and also that most people that are "climate activists" think that they're intellectual by virtue of their opinions.

You might struggle to create a website that's useful if you aren't allowed to put exampled of said hateful speech on there without getting shut down though.

I didn't say that I was an Intellectual, I said that I like to think of myself as an Intellectual,

Best to encourage others when they want to do some good for Humanity and our Home Planet instead of poking fun at them.

Although you have the right to say what you like and I am not trying to take that right away from you, but I also have the right to disagree with what you are saying.

As long as we both respect each other's rights I believe everything will be fine.

Although I still wish that you had gone about this in a more positive and constructive way.

Nevertheless from the domaining point of view I was very surprised to see that these domains were still available.

IMO

The media steers public to change political views. Threads like this are quite harmful as it give ammunition whether it has been discussed. Ban the site based on law not the domain based on emotion of what it could be.

Not to worry after the Monster welcomed Gab, why get particular? Bring Parler into the fold too. Stormfront and the n-word mania site can’t be far behind for Epik’s servers.

Will Registrars ban or delete "hate" domain names

100% Yes.

Registrars are already blocking Covid related domains.

Look at the mass purge going on online right now, with platforms and hosts booting various people & groups.

Domain registrars will ban more and more keywords, individuals and groups.

2021 will not be a good year for internet freedoms.
