Will Registrars bans or deletes "hate" domain names in the future?

  • This poll is still running and the standings may change.

Since 2016, the political climate around the world has become polarized. Many tech companies started banning and deplatforming users, recently the US president.

Will other tech companies such as registrars conform to this policy?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
At the end all domain names will be deleted because everything is bound to offend someone. For example, namepros, how offensive is this name for people just starting? By using the word "pros" its not inclusive, it's almost like saying "go away newbie". I could see a newbie needing lifelong therapy after seeing this name.

How about Amazon.com? How insensitive is it for the people that are fighting to preserve the Amazon rainforest to use that name for a place that sells items that might play a role in the destruction of the Amazon? What about the indigenous tribes that live in the Amazon? Shouldn't we restore the name to its real meaning and not profit off the struggles of the people living there?

I am obviously not being serious, but if we do not learn to tolerate others and live a life of "agreeing to disagree" we will end up in a slippery slope that achieves nothing but misery for all.

It's already began. It was easy enough for covid-related domains to be snatched away. Our domains were considered sacred territory once, but as with anything that is subject to judgement or interpretation, there is danger of losing control to.

If it can happen to our very own voice, the manner in which we choose to speak things, than of course to something like a domain. But take heart, a domain and it's content under your control is still no where near subject to the same moderation or censorship that may occur down a social media avenue.

The issue is not with domain names, which can often be ambiguous.

It is with the websites, and the content that they publish.

Good morning. Maybe you should be serious. Maybe we all should.

Maybe it is time we all stopped turning a blind eye. Children of today are better at highlighting the issues we chose to ignore. We are both the problem and the cure. Make your own coffee. Don't buy new clothes. Switch off that tv. Walk. Cycle. If you can. If you can't do, your own thing. One small step is all it takes. Literally and figuratively.

its not their place as a company to be that bias. You should be able to hold any domain at a registrar unless you yourself cause problems with it, it shouldnt be anything.

Politics was already a joke, now it has turned into a sport...

For predictions of the future ...I don’t think it’s a good idea for tech companies to bother with nonsense

Back in 2017 the Naacp forgot to renew one of the worst words out there.

There are names and then there are names, some are so controversial and vile that most people would never want any association with them. We wrote back in December about the uproar surrounding the domain name Retarded.com being auctioned at Namescon.

Well now what is one of, if not the most offensive word in the English language, so offensive it is usually only mentioned as “The N Word” has fallen through a couple cracks.

*****r.com has been owned by the NAACP as far back as 2001 according to Domain Tools. It looks like someone there has unfortunately let that domain name expire.

To add insult to injury NameJet included the name in their daily newsletter today.

Under exclusive to NameJet the domain which is registered at NetworkSolutions.com was included on Namejet.com daily list of domains.

https://www.thedomains.com/2017/02/12/naacp-fails-renew-*****r-com-name-now-namejet/

They did get it renewed as many reached out.
Lot of comments on what should have been done.

Will Registrars ban or delete “hate” domain names in the future?

Disclaimer: This post is for adults only, should not be read around children or at work, the subject of the article deals in words many will find offensive or possibly be triggered by. Have an agreed list of names, phrases etc that are defined as "hateful" and then block them from being used........I would like to say simple......but with the amount of bloody bureaucracy, invested interests and polarised opinions in the world today such a supposedly simple course of action probably won't happen.....

Just needs a bit of common sense when it comes to what is truly hateful instead of mean, hurtful or perceived as offensive which makes the job a lot harder........

Also a word can be used in a hateful manner when used by a person and if another uses it then it can be acceptable depending on cultural differences.....but there are certain phrases, terms, words that should be easily identifiable as hateful still........you would like to think

Sooooo not bloody simple at all

Think it could start to happen in the future, but when you have certain registrars that promote free speech at whatever the cost then it might not become universally accepted unless it is set by ICAAN and all other relevant bodies - which if it ever happened could take years and years and few more on top of that.......

Names? :bored: oh, domain names?

I thought you meant names of people then for a second!

I personally don't understand why you'd want to stop any name from being used, cause it might be used positively.

Even if it wasn't, as long as it's not illegal content (and I don't include offensive in that) then who cares. Nobody can stop speech, it doesn't matter how hard you try and if you tried that hard we've got serious issues. You have the stasi.
Illegal content can and is being created on any domain, very hard, if not impossible to stop that but there are mechanisms in place that can stop domains being made available.......

As an example - One area of domains that we could all (hopefully) agree on being banned is to do with child pornography and all associated search phrases that have harmful intent - it is not about stifling free speech, it is about terms/domains that can be universally accepted as hateful/illegal - though if someone is a paedophile then it won't be "universally" accepted......

Now there are many positives of writing about the harmful impact on the above and people sharing their experiences so others come forward and charities, blogs, companies working in this space can/are using domains that are not hateful.....

Boils down to the intent of the phrase, term & domain which is why I said it is not simple......

I still think that any subject, even the aforementioned could direct people to an awareness campaign, so even that example doesn't quite stand the test if you ask me...

I'd imagine that people that want to host that kinda stuff aren't hosting it on a domain that makes it obvious.

I can see that you're not coming at this from a negative place, I think we both want what's good in the world, but I can't think of an example that can't be turned round and used in a good way.

Like you said policing content is difficult, so banning words is just pointless and overreach imho because it's assuming the intent of the use of the domain before it's been used.

I mean... What's hosted on the EMD for the aforementioned subject? I don't dare to type it in

Ohhh, I didn't know about this. I checked, and indeed, it already started, by Namecheap, "The Los Angeles-based company says the measure is to prevent abuse and fraud from sites trying to hawk fake products..."

https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/25/...irus-covid-19-domain-name-ban-registrar-abuse

As far as I know, a registrar only act AFTER an obvious fraud or abuse has been committed. Not before.

You seem scared to speak clearly, how does anything get solved with cryptic fearful talk?

What problem? What cure? Speak up so we could help each other.

I'm not scared to speak. Perhaps I just wasn't clear enough in my response about specific issues. That was my fault.

You mentioned Amazon (the online retailer) and The Amazon (the river). People are buying more things than they actually need which creates a demand for increased resources either manufactured or natural. If we thought more about the river and less about the online retailer we can and will make a difference. I am trying to do my bit for the planet. I only purchased one new piece of clothing in past year and on reflection I can agree that I didn't even need to buy that. This year, I will endeavour to buy no new pieces of clothing.

It is one small thing. Maybe if I tell others they will do the same.

I hope that I have clarified everything.

Regards,

Reddstagg

I had some aged Corona GEO names from Corona, CA blocked on sedo, not that I use them as a first choice, but overreach here is over warranted. Registers have a role in their services, if something is criminal, or over the line the right agency will step in, but we have to keep some levels of freedom. If you want internet censorship, just move to China, and you will be very happy.

Freedom of speech is already eroded with cancel culture. What will be defined as hate? Getfitfatty. Would that be considered hate towards fatties? You bet someone will be trying to tell you how to live already happened with corona names.

This is what I mean we are just discussing it and it's like a rabbit hole - we could just keep going down it with no agreement reached even though the intentions are good - now imagine this happening at a decision making level :dead: - nothing will ever get accomplished .....

And there is no way in hell I would type in any of the EMD's or search terms to see how they are being used - most of them will be being tracked by some government agencies, vigilante organisations etc etc - I'm not going on their radar :xf.smile:

Even NP is banning such word. Banning words in a domain name forum defeats the purpose of domain forum, we talk about words, texts, phrases. Ban will hamper the purpose of the forum. I initially thought the link or page was removed, I had to type the n word correctly. https://www.thedomains.com/2017/02/12/naacp-fails-renew-*****r-com-name-now-namejet/

There's a word in the article (the 'fa....' word) that is ambiguous as it has a number of different meanings, but was adopted as a slander in the last 50-odd years.

In the age of social media - almost any word (or symbol) can be adopted by a cause and within weeks/months can lose its original meaning, and be banned.

There are always polite ways around these sorts of issues.
Sometimes, what is acceptable in one society/country isn't acceptable in the US.
When in doubt, use wild card characters.

They will not only do it, but they'll keep changing the meaning of words to make it happen. :hungover:

The media steers public to change political views. Threads like this are quite harmful as it give ammunition whether it has been discussed. Ban the site based on law not the domain based on emotion of what it could be.
