Hi,

I've just built an MS Excel macro to merge different parameters that have effects on the potential value of your .app domain.

I've made it specialized for ".app" but not for ".com, .io etc." since the formula has parameters like
  • "Is the domain the name of an active app released on Google Play and/or AppStore?",
  • "What is the download volume?" etc.
Other parameters are quite common with those which appraises domains with any extensions: e.g.
  • search result performance of the phrase,
  • TLD penetration,
  • traffic rank of the most similar domain with the highest rank (for example, for the appraisal of abc.app, the traffic rank of abc.com),
  • synthesis of appraisal results from different services,
  • length,
  • trademark strength,
  • meaningfulness,
  • etc.
Attention for 3 issues!
(1)
Appraisal is based on a 0-5 scale with a value up to 2 decimal values (e.g. 2.65) but is not in money terms (e.g. $3,380). For a decent conversion from 0-5 appraisal score to US dollars, as benchmarks, you may use my appraisals of .app domains sold & reported on NameBio so far. You may... Or maybe you'd better not (perfect correlation is not guaranteed). I don't know.
(2) Please do not hope instant appraisals since I'm around a few times a week. Just post yours on this thread and I'll reply on occasion. (note: if you have many, please downsize your sample to 2-3 domains since the method is not fully-automated currently.)
(3) Please do not rely on these appraisal scores (this is some sort of disclaimer).

Just to provide some benchmark values, below are my appraisal scores (0-5 scale) of .app domains which were reported on NameBio as sold:

host.app = 4.73 (reported sale: $13,981)
rn.app = 4.42 (reported sale: $15,000)
hedgefund.app = 3.13 (reported sale: $251)
youproductive.app = 1.63 (reported sale: $1,300)
qar.app = 3.36 (reported sale: $117)

Probable FAQ: Why are you doing this?
A: I'm just trying to verify how well my appraisal algorithm performs.

Good luck on your sales.

I think that the idea of a domain specific evaluation method has a lot of merits, and I hope that others develop similar tools for some of the other extensions. In fact I was so inspired by your initiative in developing the tool and announcing it here @un1 that I wrote a blog post about both your APP tool and also the limitations currently in how Estibot and GoValue deal with (some) extensions. Therefore I see a tool that restricts itself to an extension or group of extensions makes sense. Here is the link to my post... let me know if there is anything you would like added or changed.

The idea of a rating, rather than dollar value directly, is also innovative (and imho good!). By correlating sales values to the rating, eventually one could actually predict the likely precision of the tool, which is very good! Of course many more APP sales are needed before we can do that with your tool.

I would love to learn more about how you evaluate meaningfulness. Also, re relationship to apps in one of the major app stores, how does that interplay with trademark? Supposedly an exact match is asking for a UDRP claim? (as has been pointing out there have been more trademark challenges in app than NameBio recorded sales so far in the extension).

Anyway, thank you and congratulations on this new initiative!

Again, do not get disappointed with lower-than-expected scores (if any). Just as an example, the same formula evaluates "atomicsw.app" at around 1.80, and I believe atomicsw.app is one brilliant domain to hold (much better than those having >3.0 scores).

Btw, I wonder what the rationale was when moving this thread to "For Sale / Advertising Board" forum.

Just read this post and the blog article, and definitely appreciate them, thank you. Btw, your presumptions about GoDaddy GoValue etc. are completely right, @MetBob. And it is not fully automated (the parts including meaningfulness, phonetics, trademark strength ratings); for those which are based on subjective/manual ratings, I use "Likert" scales, and any value (e.g. from 1 to 5) in Likert does have some standardized implication. For example, regarding trademark strength,
  • 1 -> generic phrases or random letter combinations which are not used as trademarks. Exception: e.g. if it is the trademark of a micro-scale company (let's say, a butcher shop in rural Kiribati), the score is still 1.
  • 2 -> deformed versions of strong trademarks (e.g. "itun") and/or out-of-context trademarks (e.g. "kandle", the name of a decently-known singer)
  • 3 -> well-known trademarks with no relevant apps released and/or no "mobile", "app-related" orientation (e.g. "baze") or generic names of mobile apps (e.g. "squadd", "dancingline" etc.)
  • 4 -> well-known trademarks with apps released (or at least app-related orientation): e.g. "virgingames", "storspelare" etc. Rule: The sole activity is not the mobile app; the app is just the extension to the existing business.
  • 5 -> well-known "mobile-first" trademarks (i.e. the main area of activity is 'app-related' services): e.g. "heimlich", "bambo", "xpro" etc.
Other subjective parameters have similar segmentations under same Likert scale. Thanks again for your close interest.
