If this has been discussed before in other threads - sorry did a search and could not find anything

I have tried listing a .app domain on both sites and each time have encountered problems, my question is why cant sites pick up new extensions and forward plan for when then go live? Seems like a common sense business practice to me

Thanks for the replies - Kate read the thread and really interesting technical points raised (some of it over my head!) question still remains as to why platforms are so slow to respond to new extensions, especially if they seem to be showing a high interest from investors/domainers etc

Surely there is plenty of time to gauge demand/interest?

As I'm fairly new to the industry and have have missed other new extensions entering the market am I missing something or as a business should they be keeping on top of trends etc

Simply put, the effort has to be worthwhile in terms of sales or parking revenue. Not convinced it is. Domainers are not at the development wheel.

Don't worry you've missed nothing. New extensions are released like every month, it's nothing special.

You can just automate the process so when someone adds a domain a certificate will be issued and configured instantly. I'm not sure if it's still the case but they (letsencrypt) did have a maximum request per day(?) per ip requesting it. Also, the domain should already be using the correct nameservers.
Maybe the problem is having to reload the web server configuration each time a new certificate has been added. Slow. The problem is not just automation, but service availability.

On the other hand there is no such problem to add domains on the fly for parking, because many if not most/all parking name servers are in fact set up in 'catchall' mode and will respond to any domain. You can't do that with SSL.

From a sales point of view, they should be on it -

Again as a platform/business trying to lure consumers/investors to a market place you need to be ahead of the curve.

With the budgets involved with registrars (godaddy, sedo, undevelpoed etc etc) they should be thinking in terms of - is this extension profitable in regards to interest levels, commission values, repeat business etc - I think they all have missed a trick and could of created new business opportunities in regards to marketing and hosting

Whenever I was contacting SEDO (after a new TLD - launch) to ask them about the time when it will be possible to list the new TLD in case, they were friendly replying to me that "they work on it".
Then, about 1 - 3 weeks later it was possible to list the new TLD.

It seems that the integrating a- process of a new TLD is not as easy as we think - but to be honest, at the end "it doesn't hurt", in domaining there is patience needed anywayyy

Sedo does not offer it yet...

Undeveloped, Uniregistry, and Afternic do, but their NS servers don't support it.

You can use domainsales.app for a free SSL redirect to @Undeveloped (or other) for .app domains.

Good point - I'm not putting down the technical work involved - which I have not got a clue about, they are after all supposed to be the experts in this.

I am just trying to understand the business side of these platforms, which all (in my mind) seem to be quite slow to reacting to the market. If you can gain a competitive edge then why not explore and develop it - instead of the standard "we are working on it" behind the curve model

Thanks Michael - but why do they have to wait? Is there a technical point I'm missing out on?

I actually think they (SEDO) are just "relaxed", they are long enough in this business...

Generally the forwarding of an .app - domain to a SSL - page works.
For example, I own vveb.app and it forwards to a SEDO offerpage.

Everyone's going to have to get these things worked out soon. Who knows how long it will take each company to move.

Kate pointed out a good thread to read to get an idea of different company's mindsets and some technicals. To be honest no one was ready for a domain extension that required SSL. Read the last page to see some thoughts from Parking owners.

Maybe but I don't knowww
I assume it will take a fewww days / nights and it will be possible to list it everywhere...

To be clear, I only mean listing (it for sale & forward to the offerpage), I don't mean parking (SSL - "problem" as others mentioned already).

But that's just somewhat being lazy right? In this industry we care about privacy, whois protection, we don't like to disclose a lot of info about our sources, etc. Shouldn't the real question be why weren't they prepared? Encrypted connections are the way forward. The average Joe probably doesn't care about 'the green lock' but it is becoming more and more important. Besides, these are big enough companies to be aware of these things and have (or should have) the knowledge to implement this.

Well, they had found a way around it in the past with using redirects to their own URLs with a SSL certificate to keep SEO rankings and show the lock, but .app requires an SSL to be installed at the server it is hosted at - rather that is a forwarding service or a website. So in that case they were caught with their pants down - since they thought they had found a solution that would last for some time.

Just my $0.02 from where I think they are coming from.

@Michael M On a sidenote, great to see your initiative with domainsales.app!

All parking providers have been looking for a scalable solution for a while now. We recently discovered a potential solution to mass scale getting SSL activated on all domains parked with us. We need to negotiate a deal first before we can technically implement the solution. If the negotiations go well this week by next week we could implement the solution which would be a win-win for all.

I had seen the tweet about that as well... Waiting to get through verification now so I can test if they support SSL when pointing to their nameservers.

Actually Sedo just now tweeted me back.

.App domains won't work when pointing to their NS servers.

They did use the word "yet" so I imagine that means they are working on it.

Yes, that would be parking - but its possible to list them to offer them for sale.

That is what this thread was about. But you are correct, you can now list them.
