Do you avoid registering domains at 1and1 and would you use them if they allowed for a domain "Push"

Ok... Long time users... please bear with me here.

I'm sure you're sick of seeing posts of 1and1 domain transfer horror stories. I've searched the history here and am well aware this not a new topic, but I just wanted to get a sense of how many people in this profession:

  1. Absolutely avoid 1and1 for not allowing easier, more cost efficient way of domain transfer (no existing user "push" option)
  2. Avoid purchasing domains from sellers who list their domains as being registered at 1and1
  3. Would you consider using them if they changed their transfer policy and enabled the ability to "push" domains to existing users?
I just want to get a metric to see just how many people avoid that registrar and also see if you think that if we (as a community) think it might be beneficial to petition? Change.org? Ok... now I understand this isn't a major issue plaguing society or some movement to weed out social injustice but if your like me it's been a real road block to efficient transactions and... in some cases, your stuck holding a fairly significant amount of inventory.

This will probably turn out to be a relatively small sample but I'm just interested to see if anyone thinks it would be worthwhile? Take the poll, chime in below. Would really love to get peoples take on this.

Below are a few Change.org example petitions requesting companies change/adjust their services/corp policy. How many signatures do you think it would take to see any kind movement on this issue by 1and1 on this?

  • Tell BOA to not end their free checking (379,671 signatures)
  • McDonalds: Its time for a healthy, meatless option (118,271 signatures)
  • Tell Walmart, target and Toys R Us to give their employees the Thanksgiving day off (82,105 signatures)
  • Bring the 2015 Civic Type R VTEC Turbo to North America (24,539 signatures)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I think no amount of signatures will make 1and1 change their policies.
Their business strategy is luring you in with cheap(ish) promo domain names and then making you stay by any cunning trick legally possible. If they change their push/transfer policies, they'll have to change domain pricing as well.

Even if they changed their policy I would not believe them.

Wow. That bad, huh? If they announced the change I would welcome the hell out of it. Ha!

Have you had any particular issues? I mean, so far the push option is my only issue. Which is a huge one.

so whats wrong with 1and push and transfer exactly?

its kind of hard to say they are unusable when you have even a handful members here on np who have used them for years without issue.

it sure makes you wonder.

do you know what people are talking about exactly, when they speak about problematic push and transfer? and if you know, then how did you find a solution to that?

Yes, no need to repeat or create new thread, just ask Google about:

1&1 sucks

1&1 stole my domain name

1&1 collection agency

Can't understand why we keep getting these new threads, 1&1 have not changed.

I would never ever use those skanky @sshats again... 1&1 are scumbags of note.

If someone gave me a $100 free coupon for 1&1 domains, I wouldn't even use it...I would throw it in the thrash.

Thats great to hear, honestly. I want to know both sides. If you're an active domain investor, which I see that you are, how do you deal with transferring domains using non-brokered sites? For instance I've sold several through Afternic. Great experience and had no issues because you simply provide the Auth Code and BOOM money in your account. However, when using other auction platforms (bido for instance) I've made the sale only find out they wont purchase because they dont want to pay for a years reg fee up front.

Would love to know your thoughts on domains that have paid reg fees several years in advance only to find those fees nullified because you purchased the domain from 1and1. For instance, I've seen a few where that was a big selling point. "Domain has been reg for the next 3 yrs and will push to your Namesilo account".

I had a domain on 1and1 and eventually sold it through Sedo. The transfer out procedure was very slow. However, it did work in the end. I had to follow up with a phone call which was a tad annoying. I would not say they are a scam from my experience but I would say they are just not as polished as the other big players such as Namecheap and Godaddy.

One thing I did not like was the fact that my who.is information was never picked up properly on who.is or similar sites, even when I had no privacy enabled. That was probably the cause of the domain name transfer delay as verifying my identify was difficult due to the Who.is. Even changing it on the 1and1 portal didn't work properly. This said, I reiterate that I did not feel they were a scam, just a bit rusty. I used them as they had a cheap .io registration price at the time so I guess you have to weigh up the pros and cons.

1 last con and I don't like his feature - you are able to sign-in using your domain name as the username. I think this is a security risk. The reason being that if someone knows your domain name they just need to guess the password and not the username!

I can relay my most recent experience. I have several domains that were sold via auction with the expectation that they would simply be pushed to their account once the money was transferred. Two of them were .io ($35-$45 reg fee) and the buyer backed out of the sale because 1and1 doesnt allow you to push the domain to another existing 1and1 user like other registrars. Instead you have to "transfer" the domain, which means (as a buyer) in order to receive the domain you have to pay to register it for a year.

As you can see this is problematic if 1. I pre-registered a domain for several years and then sell with the intent of passing that along to the new buyer or 2. If I buy a domain thinking its a quick flip, I've just added $35-$45 to the back end of the sale.

as per my previous reply - mine was also an issue with .io... perhaps these issues occur with that extension in particular on 1and1?

The issue is the price of the reg fee. Lets say I sell a domain at auction for $30 to get rid of it. The buyer thinks they are getting it for $30, instead, the cost of the auction plus reg fee is $65-$70. I sold a .net $15 and the new buyer stated they didnt agree to an additional $19.99 reg fee before they even get control of the domain.

well... auctions like GD auctions force buyer to pay upfront for transfer to gd. so pushing is not even an option. also, in other auction sites, I do not really see why a buyer would refuse to pay for transfer.. because in the end it is not money wasted or extra cost.. buyer is just paying to renew his domain for another year by transfering it. whcih sooner or later we all have to renew anyway.

I have had no problem with brokered sites like Sedo or Afternic. With these it's understood that an Auth Code to transfer is provided. I put in the code and boom, money in my account. The issue thru non-brokered service like auctions and such.

I think one problem with 1and1 is that they aren't as refined for dommainers as other places.. they do hosting etc.. and their priority is not domains.

you can easily see this by their crap user interface.. no bulk options.. etc..

Not if they purchased it with the intent to turn around and sell it for more. Maybe their intent was to purchase it on the cheap beacuse they have a buyer in mind, and they want to maximize their profit. Buying through 1and1 just tacked on an additional charge that you were not expecting.

hmmm.. it doesn't sound like they'll be making a lot of profit if they can't afford to pay a $10 transfer fee for .com
