The top ccTLD sale this week was Devils.tv for $10,000 on Sedo. I just wrote a piece about the history of the name and looks like CSC is buying up team mascot names in the NHL.

You never know in this business, things you register and believe in never take hold, you get tired and sell for pennies or you may even just drop a domain altogether. When I saw a domain on the Sedo sales report this week it took me back close to a decade.

Devils.tv sold for $10,000 this week and was the top country code sale on Sedo. Way back when in the Dot Tv subforum on Namepros, the NHL teams were discussed as one group now owned by the NHL, at the time the NFL owned the team names in their league, a couple years later they dropped them all and people rushed to buy them all up.

I had owned bruins.tv and friend and fellow .tver Lance Block had picked up Devils.tv and Flyers.tv. In 2007 Lance had discussed with me his disappointment that Devils.tv could not even get $1 on Namepros when he put it up for offer. Eventually he put them up for auction and I think the pair sold for $25.

Isn't this borderline TM squatting though? The sole purpose that they were regged was that they were team names.

I think David just so long as people don't put up any content they are ok, I remember the NFL dropped all their teams at once, they owned like 30 out of the 32. I think Mike Berkens owns Wild.tv which I mention in the article, he did not buy it for Hockey, but rather wild or crazy tv like reality shows. I remember staying away from the NFL teams because I thought who will want to buy them even if I make sure no NFL related content ? But Cowboys.tv could certainly be a website with content about Cowboys and not football. Certain teams are better than others Cowboys has options, Packers ? I don't think there are many options other than the football team in Green Bay. Wild is better than Red Wings for hockey names, again IMO.

Thanks for expanding on the topic as it seemed to glorify the stance of registering TM's (the potential profit outweighed the risk). I think that devils, flyers, and packers fall into a grey area as they can have more than one purpose (unlike Seahawks, etc.). I just didn't want to see someone go out there and reg things like newjerseydevils.tv because of this (though I'm sure it'll be gone within the day).

All these names have been registered for years, and they are generic, you are correct once you get into the full team name that is obvious cybersquatting. As always I never recommend anyone register anything, I write about either what I am doing or what I see. The fact is CSC is out buying names not filing UDRP's. I think with no use of the sport and never offering it to the team I think any UDRP would fail, if not Jerry Jones would have filed years ago for Cowboys.com.

The title on that auction thread linked in the post here would have made these scary to most people. "Hockey Fans?" says right away they were being sold as TM names. Perhaps that's why no one here was interested back then.

And then anyone know what the renewal on these .tv's were for the last 9 years? I don't know what TV gets now but I seem to remember "back then" .tv's weren't cheap to buy or renew....

The NHL teams were all non premium renewal $25 to $30.
