Hi,

I need to choose which one should be primary. Some websites on new gTLDs have www and some without www. Seems to me the newer do not use WWW. Is "WWW" redundant?

http://****.sale or http://www.*****.sale

What to choose?

Please vote.

Thank you.

Why do people use 'www' in their domains...?

I'm actually not sure. Some websites don't even resolve without the www. (including my girlfriends university).

Interesting... On the 1st page 90% are with "www".

I believe when you register your site in Google and other directories as well, you can type "www".
It will make the site/domain look more professional (and more catchy if that's a short name).

Anyway, your visitors will visit your site without typing "www"...

That's actually very interesting. I'm assuming that's because many people don't realize .sale is a legit extension.

Unless you use www I am assuming that 90%+ of the people who see it won't even realize it is a domain name. Something like Jewelry.sale doesn't even look like a domain to me, and I am in the field.

Can you name all of the nGTLDs without Googling it? I definitely can't.

I think people nowadays are not dumb.

There is a difference between being dumb and just being unaware.

I deal with end users daily. I think you are vastly overrating the awareness of the average person when it comes to domain names, especially new extensions.

I think it all depends. Domain hack/super generic= no www

www actually designates a subdomain. Your domain name with or without it can/could be seen as two separate sites. There used to be a lot of issues with Google ranking each version independently of each other. These days I believe most systems either get setup to redirect from one to the other and/or Googlebot is smart enough to figure it out.

I don't really understand all this but this article may help if you are interested.

www was originally to specify the web hosting part of a server, typically port 80. Companies would use domain names for a lot of internal uses. They'd have pop.company.com imap.company.com for e-mail. Company.com would typically be representative of their "Main Frame" or main NOC. They would use www to specify world wide web.

I always use www. But, it doesn't matter in terms of ranking or anything of that nature.

Are you thinking the www looks familiar?

I don't use www, I have www redirect to the domain without it. The historic reasons why it was sometimes necessary really no longer exist (distinguish the web server from ftp etc. services).

I think you give them too much credit. MANY people still type http:// each time.

Hey, Frank Schilling's "Sexy" is not so sexy example, you see:

sexyuni.png

You clearly see "www" on the main page...

Now, if you read the article I gave you above, you will find out that "www" is needed for big sites with many pages. In case of Frank Schilling's advertising campaign this is the Landing Page, which results in 1 page only, with the main purpose of redirecting users to the Uniregistry (Registrar's agent). So, "www" is not needed... and though there is no consistency: on the bus from RU's photo we see no "www" and opa! on the main page there is "www". I wonder if that image was created by Frank's webmasters?

P.S. All those sexy Liliana, sexy Nina, sexy Anton... did they ALL abandon their sexy pages???

http:// is correct. Browsers are capable of handling multiple different protocols. Browsers will often assume http:// if you don't specify, but that is a browser compensating for a user incorrectly entering where they want to go. And browsers sometimes guess wrong, sometimes they guess you want a search and not http://

I type it because if I am looking at a site on my local development network without it, some browsers will assume I want to do a search because I'm not using an "official" FQDN. So I got into the habit of doing it - but it is the correct habit.

It is correct to specify protocol://FQDN/path into a browser. Be it http, ftp, etc.
