I know quite a lot of people socially and most are clueless when it comes to domains, so when someone has a unique last name, the domainer side of me kicks in and I check to see if the dot com is registered, the result is a growing list of really good last names.

I registered the names in the event they or one of their children wanted to make a family web site out of it, passing it down to future generations, Turning a profit played no part..... Well, after many years, none of them took me up on my offer until last week, Sadly one of the siblings passed away from a rare cancer, leaving behind a Wife and 3 young children, they wanted to dedicate a web site to him and asked to use the family name I registered, I not only transferred the domain to them but I gave them a free hosting account on my server and setup Wordpress..

In domaining, profit is great, but their should also be a human side to domaining, helping out people we really care about,:)

Raider girl, you make an important point here.

Domainers can do a lot of good both at the personal level and global level provided that they can free themselves from all the old political, religious, and social affiliations that want to tie them down by persuading them to use their energy and knowledge in negative ways.

By becoming a free spirit that is powerful, righteous, and fair, domainers can use their expertise in ways that could serve the humanity as a whole. We have domainers from all over the World here with all kinds of different backgrounds and different ways of thinking, but unfortunately the only thing that they have in common right now is that they are all looking to make a profit so that they can fulfill their primitive needs and desires better. Although it’s okay to make a profit, but there is more to this World than just getting rich.

I hate to see domainers being at each other’s throat all the time in the political and religious threads while the reality is that as long as they keep acting as pundits for different political and religious groups and as long as they keep attacking others while ignoring their own shortcomings they can only be viewed as fanatics which although might be more sophisticated and technologically advanced, but are no different then Taliban in their ways of thinking.

IMO

That's commendable of you RaiderGirl. The situation at hand called for some compassion, which you gave freely and without expectation. I admire that!

On a side note, you mentioned that you've been collecting last names for a while and people turned you down for years when you offered them. Were all those people that turned them down friends or family that you offered the domains to free as well? Maybe the concept of domaining and the technological knowledge needed to develop and maintain a site on one was a little to overwhelming for them to even accept it free?

And on an even higher note, I would assume that if someone you didn't know contacted you about one of those last names in your possession that you would put a price tag on them (As would most domainers)? Or are you implying that all the last name domains in your portfolio are free of charge? (I ask because there may be a lot of members with same last names that like free stuff and translate your message in a way that they are all given away. So clarification would be nice.) lol

Oh and one last curiosity question, How many last name domains do you currently have in your portfolio?

Thank you for your kind words....

Your right on both points Eric, they were all friends and family, I figured that if I didn't grab it for them someone else would, and most of them simply don't possess the knowledge of creating a web site, I knew this when I registered the names but I figured one of their children would appreciate having it and would be more internet savvy.

This particular case I helped the person create web site many years ago and he's really gotten into word press, he's the one who asked me for the domain after his brothers passing.

Yes, I received several offers and I inflated the price because I knew most of them would not be willing to pay what I was asking for a family oriented site... If they did agree to pay, I would have made a call to the family and let them know, "Do you want it or should I take the offer and split with you?"

Or are you implying that all the last name domains in your portfolio are free of charge?

Free to the families who gave me the idea to register them.

Oh and one last curiosity question, How many last name domains do you currently have in your portfolio?

Not a lot, I think have about 6... It's not a niche I wanted to get into for profit...

Good questions ;)
