First version of self-brokering system is limited. Afternic launched a new feature today that allows domain name investors to self-broker domain names rather than have Afternic’s brokers manage negotiations. The self-brokering feature is very much a minimum viable product, and it will only make sense for some domain name investors to consider at this stage....

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Sellers need to have an active Premium Domain Discount Club membership ($240/year) to opt into self-brokering.

If GoDaddy was a real person, it would be in an insane asylum.

Imagine spending $71.4M to acquire a company with a fully-developed, top-tier and globally-beloved self-brokerage system just to KILL it off and launch a caricature of the original system 3 years down the road.

It's insane.

Demanding a GoDaddy subscription to use this abomination is even more insane.

GD is trying to suck blood from a corpse. They killed Afternic already. Now if you put your dot com name into GD Search Field (the exact match, just without ''.com'') - it doesn't give your name and does not provide it anywhere close at all. Maybe for some it's different, but I tried 5 different names and it's all the same story - you don't see your name at all. You see all the other extensions and then made-up similar words in com, but not yours.

And with this reality GD is trying to offer ''self-brokerage'', with a lame attempt to sign up domainers for their shit-''premium''?? To self-broker on what exactly? No one sees your names unless you have the lander with them, but that's the whole different story, and hardly you need Afternic/GD for type-in visits - huge fat zero as a benefit in return of crazy-ass commissions they ask for.

Let's fix Afternic's self-brokerage structure.
  1. Available for ALL sellers (remove the need for a Premium Domain Discount Club membership ($240/yr)
  2. Lower commission to 10%>12%
  3. Include 'Request Price' lander for self-brokerage leads
  4. Remove the need to create an account just to make an offer
It's such an anti-climax for something we've all been waiting for.

Nikul mentioned this on the DNW podcast how there's this trepidation about making suggestions to Gd in case they use it to make even more money.

Therefore, my advice would be to start making feature requests to other platforms that don't have the same constant need to maximise shareholder value.

Agreed, and the GD execs are looking to monetize virtually everything - it wouldn't surprise me if they install treadmills for the workers to generate electricity for the office, with the excess power being resold.

Everything is a money-making scheme to them.

GoDaddy seems to be viciously anti-domainer. I was aware they did something terrible with their Search Field but I didn't know it was that bad.

I just tried it now and it did not display my .com domain anywhere on the page. In fact, it displayed everything but the .com.

And this is despite the fact that the domain name is registered with GoDaddy and listed on Afternic with fast transfer activated.

It's horrible.

I checked other popular registrars to see how they handle it.

Here's what I found:

On Namesilo, .com is number 1 everytime.

On Dynadot, .com comes 5th every time.

On Namecheap, .com is number 1 everytime.

On Porkbun, the position of the .com changes but it never drops below the 3rd position.

Even on NetworkSolutions, .com is the default extension.

But GoDaddy makes the .com disappear if it's premium.

That is strange and wicked.

.com doesn't pay for positioning
while some others will
EU has this fun new regulation that websites need to disclose the rules they apply to ordering search results. GD in EU fails to comply, or maybe I'm blind. However, they do seem to mark some results as "promoted", so I assume these are the registries who paid them for positioning.

I feel even on Atom now is something like GD Afternic, you will soon not know where to go, there is silence on Atom on my domains.

In the meantime, these developments elsewhere are reassuring:
