Hi everyone,
Does anyone know exactly when the .uk is coming to market? What is the best way to ensure that you get the domain you want?
Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
"Over ten million existing .uk customers will be offered the shorter equivalent of their current address, with five years to decide whether they want to use it in addition to, or instead of the domain they already have."

I can't find anything about a date on their site as well; I own many decent co.uk's that were regged after the date listed above, so wouldn't be very happy if that was true.

99.9% of .co.uk holders will have first choice on to pick up the .uk domain nominet put in a small date clause to protect a few .org.uk registrants were no corresponding .co.uk was registered at the time of the announcement

So I'm confused now...... I got these names from the drop, so they were already regged BEFORE these date, just by someone else...... will I still get first choice at the equivalent ".uk" versions or not?

CAVEAT: Only domains registered prior to October 28 2013 — when the Nominet board voted on the proposal — will qualify for the free reservation.

So don't register a bunch of co.uk hoping for this perk!

This not quite the case there is a clause to protect a few org.uk holders were no .co.uk existed. this is mostly to protect small charity's that never took there co.uk.
Its highly unlikely that any commercially useful domain would be registered in the other third levels yet .co.uk still being available. New .co.uk registered after this date are eligible for .uk if org/me/ltd .uk doesn't already exist

Have look at the questions and answers there releasing a lot more info here all the time

Thanks for the link. Seems I will get them reserved as they were already regged BEFORE the date. Even if they were regged AFTER the date and has never been before it seems they will still be reserved for you as long as it was not pre-existing in any other suffix before you regged it.

Yes you will still get them many of us catchers had the same fears but Nominet clarified the situation after the initial announcement so good news for the uk aftermarket

Can non-UK residents buy/register the new .UK domains?

If .UK domain will be reserved for their .co.uk equivalent, why did Godaddy mention that it will be on first come, first serve basis? It seems contradictory to me. So what happens when someone try to register a domain without prior knowledge of whether the .co.uk equivalent is owned by someone else, will they automatically restrict the registeration? If no, what happens next if the acquisition was smooth; would it be taken from the new owner?

It's not first come, first serve basis, unless the domain doesn't exist yet in .co.uk or any other third level, where priority rights could be claimed.

"For the majority of you the new .uk equivalent domain will be automatically reserved for you when it launches on 10 June 2014. So if you have a unique .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .plc.uk or .ltd.uk the shorter and snappier .uk will be reserved especially for you for free up until 10 June 2019 as long as your domain remains registered.

For some of you
there will have been more than one domain that existed before the cut off date which shared the same website name as yours but had different domain name endings (i.e. www.example.co.uk and www.example.org.uk). Therefore you can check whether you have the rights to the new .uk by using our Rights lookup tool.

If you decide not to register the new .uk equivalent domain before 10 June 2019, it will then become available for someone else to register, but your existing domain will of course still be yours as long as it remains registered to you."

I have a company where I have a few .co.uk urging me to pre-order my equivalent .uk but it appears I do not have to as I have rights up to 2019- is that correct?

It's good to see they decided to give current registrants first pick (as they should)..That had cyber-squatting written all over it! 2019 may be a little long though..is it really necessary to reserve them for 5 YEARS? Honestly, if the business hasn't bought the equivalent in 1-2yrs they probably aren't going to. The registry is going to be losing money there.

I own 10 year old 2004 registered Earphones.co.uk and so I am automatically guaranteed to be to register Earphones.UK for just £6 in just 2 weeks on June 10th.

It's here.

I now have MyWriting.uk (among others) to match my co.uk.

Had I thought this through, I would have waited until closer to 2019.

Doh.

Unless one has an uber premium, it might pay to wait.

This time frame does seem excessive.

Premium or not it does not matter. I will buy mine when:

A buyer comes along.

If I decide to develop, then I would develop the .uk and forward the .co.uk

I have my .co.uk as a "NON-UK INDIVUDUAL (REPRESENTING SELF)" and I believe the same applies to .uk

Hi, You are right. You eligible for .uk. check my screen shot. You will have to claim through registrar like go daddy, enom, InternetX.

There might chances ICANN change its rules for NON UK Nationals about claiming or registering .uk domain.

Best of luck. Claiming your .uk domain.

Domain Monster provides a trustee UK address, and I suspect other registrars do as well.

Anyone know when the extension changes within my DNS?
I am pretty sure I got UKhemp.uk even though I registered UKhemp.co.uk early this year.

http://www.ukpostbox.com/

You can get a UK Address there. Sign up for a prepaid account. Used it for years and never got charged, because really no mail goes there... So basically free...

The cut off date for grandfathering was October 2013.
