GoDaddy Auctions -- Discussion, Acquisitions, and Sales

I searched the forum and could not find a thread dedicated solely to Godaddy auctions, which seem to be heating up lately.

I envision this thread as a place for discussion regarding YOUR sales and acquisitions, and general discussion about the auction venue itself, and, perhaps, some domain oddities that are popping up on the auction site, for example, high-priced domains that should be regfee.

:)

One caveat, though: for your own good, PLEASE do not reveal your auction win (or anyone else's, for that matter) until the domain has landed in your account because the original owner still has the option to renew it, and I know how vexing that can be. In other words, don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

On the other hand, if you're having second thoughts about your auction win, by all means tell us all about it.

I suppose that if an auction win is high profile, it's already out there, but, still...

Anyway, I'll start with three comments:

1. I won my first (and maybe last) intentional typo, and it's getting clicks (no $ so far, though): Forwx.com. I could not find a live TM on this term, but one never knows. I have mixed feelings about this one.

2. I accidentally clicked on a BIN that I didn't want (I wanted the one above it), but I decided to honor the bid anyway. Grrr..., so be careful before hitting the submit button. It's not in my account yet, so I can't really reveal it right now.

3. Currently, there's a weird .co domain at over $9,000, with three bidders duking it out. Again, I don't want to reveal what it is, but if you go to the most active auctions, it's number 1 (as of this posting).

Mods, I hope this thread is okay.

:)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It's been my experience that the sale goes through Escrow for anything over $1000. If this has recently been raised to $5000, that is indeed welcome. But it wasn't like that even up to a couple of months ago (my last Escrow sale via GoDaddy).

Yes. I can confirm that the escrow fee includes the commission.

Sedo's commission for domains they sell at GoDaddy is 20% not 15%

GoDaddy don't pay the seller on day 6. I'm still waiting for payment (coming on 26th) for a domain I sold on the 3rd of this month (plus maybe a couple of days for the transfer). A non-GoDaddy domain sold for $999. So different from my Escrow remarks above.

UPDATE #1: My GoDaddy rep says they increased the limit from $1K to $5k a couple of weeks ago (after my sale above). It's good news.

UPDATE #2: My GoDaddy rep says Payments to the seller can still take up to 20 days once funds are received from the buyer.

Today was THE day for expiring .us domains on Go Daddy.

The magic age is 11, the 2002 land rush domains that are expiring.

This yearly event brings out some surprisingly good .us domains. Last year's event was quite exciting--this year, not quite so, although some nice domains were snagged for good prices.

I picked up 9 nice domains, not great but decent enough (although in dotcom, at least one of them would be a killer domain, about $xx,xxx (the "e" dotcom version sold in 2011 for low x,xxx)--I got it for $11.00 BIN, which goes to show that .us has a ways to go in terms of overall desirability).

I snagged 6 BINs ($11.00 each), 1 @ $22.00, 1 @ $12.00, and 1 @ $17.00.

The later in the day, the more expensive the domains, it seems; I suspect that some of my BINs would have garnered some bids had they been scheduled later in the day. But this year, I decided to jump on it early.

However, these land rush domains are notorious for being renewed, so mum's the word. I figure that if I actually get 4 or 5, it will be a good day.

Did anyone participate in this event? (I know you did because I had some serious competition for the higher priced domains I didn't get--decided to go cheap this time and not put all my eggs in one domain, like I did last year for Catch.us).

Don't tell us what you snagged until the domain is safely in your account...LOL

It was kind of fun, though, you know, that adrenaline thing...

:)

I can post this now; it looks as though all the 11 year olds, born on April 23, 2002 (except for BINS) have gone to bed.

Yes, I won several of them.

Two of the auctions I won have already been renewed, and I noticed another I did not win has been renewed also.

This message is to notify you that the current registrant of XXXXXXXXXX.us has renewed their domain name and we have ended the auction per the terms of the legal agreement (Universal Terms of Service) that you acknowledged at the time of bidding.

Yes I think a lot of the .us will be renewed, someone told me they thought it was a travesty and were contacting Charles Fuller who owned many including San Diego. I have no idea if Mr. Fuller is ok this person did extensive background and was checking to make sure he was alive.

Charles Fuller has already renewed several of them, earlier today after the auctions ended.

I think some of these owners are aware the domains are expired, but also like the real world appraisal they provide.

I agree Brad, its now the added time and the new game that has been added to bidding on Go Daddy Auctions.

Instead of Deal or No Deal, you now play "Is the registrant getting an appraisal?"

Letting a domain expire is also a great way to generate interest. These domains have been sitting on the shelf for many years.

I notice more people doing this with GoDaddy, NameJet, Dynadot, and others.

I have a domain currently @ $500. I'll post more once it ends, though my sig has a link to it, for the curious.

That's a nice name Randy for any company going with PP they never going to get the PP.com and most likely they are inc, corp or LLC so for the .inc its a great name and a 20 year old domain nice. Best of luck.

Thanks. Yeah, this is a gem of sorts. I'm wrapping up edits to a book I've written, thus I haven't even been on NP very often lately, let alone had I messed around much with domains. I was given a $500 offer & opposed to countering, I figured I'd try my hand at auction. I have lotta projects so I can safely rid of this for $500, assuming no further bids come in.

I won three and two were renewed almost instantly after the auctions ended. I also was second bidder on sandiego.us which I'm sure will be renewed.

I must say that I'm losing faith in godaddy.

Several months ago I submitted a complaint to icann for outdated Whois on Getmobile.com. It was owned for years by Quattro Wireless which was acquired by Apple a few years ago. Anyhow, the domain went into client hold and reached expiration. Of course I had a backorder and routinely checked to make sure it didn't slip into auction. Low and behold I get an email saying that the domain status has been updated. The new registrant is some guy in Switzerland which may or may not have ties to domainshowcase.com.

How in the world could someone else get control of the domain without any updates prior to expiration? No auction? The new Whois doesn't even come close to the outdated info so it's not a case of the prior owner updating it. Godaddy basically has no answers for me...

Do you think the domain might have been stolen ? For example the domain name used in the registrant E-mail address might have expired and been (re)registered.

Can't tell because quattrowireless.com is private. It amazes me that a customer throws up a red flag and Godaddy appears to give a standard email reply.

It could have been renewed, sold and transferred all in the same day.
It was updated yesterday on the 28th, that would be the 45th day after expiration so they may have done it just under the wire.

Or it could have been the dreaded Transfer Trick as I call it to avoid the $80 renewal fee.

And the question I would have is how in the world did the buyer contact the registrant? Godaddy didn't even have correct account email or else the registrant would update Whois before domain was suspended.

Anyhow, domain never went to auction and it should have about 10 days ago. I also emailed the current registrant to ask how they obtained the domain. Would be easy to provide an explanation but no reply yet.

Its not hard to find out who owned it, even with Godaddy hiding the owners info.
But it not going into Auction would be a red flag.Hhhmmmm :-/

I did speak with Paul Nicks today about the $5,000 threshold. It was not updated on the Go Daddy support page, he said it was $5,000 and he immediately had them update the page.
