Tumblr is doomed. Yahoo! has the Midas Touch in reverse.

It takes gold and turns it into $h1t.

Yahoo! always make the dumbest choice its in their DNA, lol. That's why they will always lose to Google. Just read the articles on Yahoo! Us or Europe. Sorry Yahoo, non payed Interns cannot monetize a portal correctly, you need native speakers and dough, CQFD...

Their email became horrible overnight. A huge banner prevents you from seeing your email :(

So they're leaving the p**n?

Lesson to anyone tempted to put all their content on a service you don't control - don't.

What happened to Geocities when Yahoo bought it?

They paid $3.57 Billion in 1999... 10 years later they stopped the services to the global public, except for Japan.

What they trying now?

Can you take these guys serious? Poor investment decisions over and over again.

Tumblr is also such a bad social platform. You easily get lost amongst all the crap that features all over the place.

Social media has been around for quite a while, and if this is what they are investing in at this point in time to gain a foothold in that space, they making a very expensive mistake. To top it off, Tumblr is not the kind of platform that is very popular online-mainly because of how messy it looks.

That's why they brought in an ex Googler (actually, a couple of them.) But I think the Yahoo zombies ate their brains.

I expect Tumblr will be gone soon enough.

The same can be said of paid hosting companies, which seem to "come and go, talking of Michelangelo" (Line from T.S. Eliot poem, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock". :D

True, but if you have a "normal" hosting plan at least you can back up your account and move your content elsewhere.

Definitely a bad news. I really don't see a good future for tumblr in the hands of yahoo. Users still has a few years to enjoy tumblr until it closes. A true sad ending for a really good social network.

Sometimes, it can make sense from a business POV to kill possible competitors by purchasing them first, then finishing them off.

Yahoo had only one product: Search.
They lost it a few years back.
Now they have nothing.

Wow...yahoo has nothing.
25.51 BILLION dollar market cap.

Paying 1 BILLION in cash for tumblr.

No, they have quite a bit.

You know nothing of what you spout.

This acquisition is very simple.

Its called a tax write off of a multi-billion dollar company.

They are not as stupid as they may look sometimes.

Like many of these companies (Google, Apple, Facebook, etc.) they are trying to acquire assets in a variety of verticals they expect to grow in future years. Those three mentioned above have had a number of duds in their portfolio as well.

This purchase may be part of a longer term strategy in attempting to make Yahoo more relevant to a different generation. This may have nothing to do with making money now, as it is trying to get more account sign-ups and eyeballs over to other Yahoo services.

Remember, even though we don't think of Yahoo much anymore, they are doing quite well, are profitable and own a number of promising assets.
