Hey everyone,

What are your thoughts on WinVienna.net? Windows Vienna is the name of the OS to come after Windows Vista (the next Windows OS).

Similar domains:
WinXP .com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/.us/.name are all taken.
WinVista .com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/us/.name are all taken.
WinVienna .com/net are so far taken.

Any value on this name at the moment?

Thanks,
Andy

Eh, 23 hours later and nothing? This is exactly what I mean when I say this forum is dead.

Err, 72-hour bump. Can I please get a few appraisals?

Thanks,
Andy

Well, it's been just about two weeks now. Does anyone care to give an appraisal?

This is a bump of an old thread, but you mentioned it in a recent info post so I felt compelled to check it out.

Vienna is a Microsoft codename and not the actual name that the OS would be released under. I would compare this name to domains like WinLonghorn.net or WinWistler.net before WinVista.net.

WinVienna.net =
Microsoft Codename
+ Abbreviated form of 'Windows'
+ .net TLD w/ availability of same domain in other gTLDs (.info most notably)
+ Windows Vista not even out yet
+ Trademark factor
= No Premium Value

Still developable of course, perhaps as an info/news site tracking progress on this next release of Windows.

Best of luck,
RJ

Wow! Thank you RJ for taking the time to hunt down this post and reply, much kudos for that. And of course for the appraisal, thank you.
I think I might turn it into a blog about the latest news and information about Windows Vista and [Vienna]. I know Vienna was originally called codename 'Blackcomb', but do you think they could change it again? If they do change it again (from Blackcomb -> Vienna -> something else) that's obviously going to wash out any value the domain has, but if Vienna ends up being the name they keep, I think it might be an okay domain. I guess it really is just taking a gamble on it all for now, 'Vienna' isn't going to be released until like 2009 or 2010 or so, so a long wait for me I guess. :p

Yeah, its definately a long term thing. Vista is coming out soon, and then you're probably looking at several solid years of Vista releases. Like you said, maybe 2009 or 2010. Looking at past Windows releases, like 3.1 to 95 to 98 to ME to XP to Vista, that might even be optimistic.

The biggest downside is that MS codenames aren't used for very long. They get a little bit of attention, then once the official name is released usage of the codename is history. A blog might not be a bad idea, but if you're going to put a lot of effort into it I'd suggest going with something more generic, like WindowsReleases or something w/o a specific release name in it, so your hard work wouldn't go to waste if they did change the codename again, and you could continue on indefinately.
