Why is traffic so important?

I have several undeveloped domains which I consider very catchy (http://65.108.237.126/) but all I keep getting asked about is the traffic on them. What's the deal with traffic and if a person asks about that, does it mean they are a reseller out to make a profit?

People want to know if people actually type that url in directly. It will give them an idea as to rate of growth, potential and the initial luanch figures.

Simple

Traffic = Sales = Money

No traffic = No sales = No money

Righto, folks buy domains for many reasons ... but existing/future traffic (depending on the Buyer's needs) for any given domain may be placed at a premium. It's usually always wise to at least "park" your domains to get an idea if there's any actual traffic to the domain name so that you can price it accordingly (if you're selling it), IMHO.

Be very careful with this thing called "traffic" to valuate domains, and to buy domains. Traffic can be easily manipulated with scripts and proxy networks. Don't depend on webstats, but other external benchmarks to help indicate that the name is built, at the very least, on solid ground.

Nonetheless, Overture is a good starting tool.

My favorite dipstick? I find that Google Adwords can give many clues as to the value and popularity of different keywords given different circumstances.

Quality traffic = Targeted Audience.
If you have a domain with audience who want to know more about webhost. Then direct the traffic to webhost = high chance of getting a deal.

Most people park their domains at sedo and other places to generate income. So traffic as stated above does equal money :)

I have a slighly different view in reagrds to stats when buying a domain name. If a domain get 100 typeins a day, that is 100 visitors who will not come back because when they went there the first time, they got nothing out of it. (IE-parking page, for sale page). Unless you have a functional site where a visitor wants to come back, using stats in regards to purchase price can be misleading. I believe domain names should be bought because someone can make something out of the name. The exception would be highly generic .coms.
