I am trying to find out why you can't register certain acronyms for second level domains..

Some I understand......like: Opec, Interpol, unesco, UN etc etc etc

but when it comes to more generic acronyms like Eco, SPC, LAS etc etc it left me scratching my head......

If someone can let me know it would be appreciated......

Read an article from 2014 - https://www.thedomains.com/2014/03/...re-being-take-back-on-icanns-restricted-list/

Which led me to - https://www.icann.org/sites/default/files/packages/reserved-names/ReservedNames.xml#IGOs-2

To save scrolling through the above list, click option 6 at the top under "DNS Labels to be reserved are included below" to view the full list of acronyms

Edit:

I mean take "Eco" the .com is a developed site - https://eco.com

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I am not sure why, but there is a whole TLD for it at least (.eco), dam expensive though.

Perhaps restricted in the same way "www" or "example" are, technical usage or confusion reasons. @jmcc might know better

Thanks

Yeah I saw .eco and your right, really expensive......

Would be nice to know the "why" behind these acronyms being restricted......do you know why "www" & "example" are restricted?

Some of the examples I gave (and a few others on the list) look like they come under confusion/trademark/protection reasons so fair enough.......

  • The Registry has reservations about certain domain names, I guess

    • It's like a single-letter domain name

This was fiercely debated at ICANN, but the IGOs managed to cram all those acronyms into the reserved list, see:

Just did a quick browse and bookmarked for further reading tonight - thanks

One thing that stood out from your comment was that words like rare & mosaic where on the original list.....and where removed even though they where exact matches on the identifier list

And "Eco" is not allowed because of the below organisations? Even though they are not exact matches? Is that right? If so, Very odd......

Eco-Accord - Center for Environment and Sustainable Development

Eco-Tiras International Environmental Association of River Keepers

Ecoagriculture International, Inc

I think the one that objects is the world famous "Economic Cooperation Organization", as per:

https://gnso.icann.org/en/group-activities/active/igo-ingo (lots of broken links!)
https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/correspondence/dryden-to-crocker-chalaby-annex2-22mar13-en.pdf

which is headquartered in Iran, and uses eco.int

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Cooperation_Organization

Utterly ridiculous, but consistent with ICANN's history of bad decision-making.

Could be it. Anyway, there's always a reason behind these things. Now, whether those reasons make sense or not, is another matter altogether
