It seems like everyone wants to own a four letter .com. Why is this so valuable to everyone?

I can see the value of a three letter .com but not four. Obviously, I'm not talking about actual four letter words. I see people registering stuff like duyt, xyha, hywu etc. Makes no sense to me.

Please explain. Thanks!!

all 4L .com's are not equal, there is huge variation in quality.

aside from real words, the ones that are good pronouncable made up words are also valuable because they are short and can be used for a business name.

I respect your point of view but there are some things that need to be said:

you are a member here for less than 3 years so I think you don`t remember well....possibly?

well......it`s a bit strange that you dislike the 4L.com which are 456,976 but you like the 5L.com which are 11,881,376 !!!

Still all the 3 chars .com sell pretty nicely. I sold my only one here for $130 few months ago.

I don`t know what you are laughting about, since I could say that 90 % of NP sales are to other domainers regardless of being 4L.com or 3L.com or other kind of domains, so you are not making sense here.

If you read correctly, I said .."ABOUT" 3 years ago.

Refer to this thread, Regarding my like for 5Letter.coms
http://www.namepros.com/374832-show-off-some-your-5-6-a-4.html

As i said, 3char.coms sell well, from one domainer to another domainer, I sold GP0.com for $325 and that was atleast 2 years ago, To another domainer of course.

I do not dislike 4letter.coms, If you read correctly, You will see i own some as well, They just aren't junk, They have true use for them.

You validated my point, About low - to low mid 4letter.coms only selling from domainer to domainer,

"Quote" I don`t know what you are laughting about, since I could say that 90 % of NP sales are to other domainers regardless of being 4L.com or 3L.com or other kind of domains, so you are not making sense here. "Quote"

If you enjoy quick flipping names for a few dollars a sale, Then you are doing the right thing, by buying junk 4letter.coms , and flipping them to other domainers.

John, did you have a look at the LLLL.com sales report thread?

There are PLENTY of UGLY LLLL.com that ended being sold for 3 or 4 figures and those buyers are non domainers.

I think , with time goes by , the number of LLLL.com seekers will increase and then eventually we`ll even see people starting a LLLLL.com (5L) countdown!

I am not doubting some decent sales, But the end user has to have a direct purpose for the 4L.com, It matches their company name and ect, The vast majority of 4L.coms, are changing hands from domainer to domainer, the same with 3char.coms, I am seeing a large increase in dropped 4L.com, That is a sign that the market is dropping in it self, I don't ever see 4L.coms, having the impact in the industry, that 3L.coms do, Nothing even close. Premuim 4L.coms will sell well, Junk 4L.coms, Will drop, or be sold from domainer to domainer. The same will happen with 5L.coms, It's quality, not quantity in domaining with me.

If i were a domain resaler - Quick Flipper, I would probably see the 4L.com craze from a different perspective.

I see that everyone has an opinion about the value of these 4L.com's. I agree that they are good for a quick flip but still don't see any long term value unless you have a really good one.

if a domain names does not make any sense, even if it is 4 or 3 letters it is just worthless.

Please tell me it because I must be blind.

On eBay , even the crappiest LLLL.com are getting above reg fee:

Dropped - Deleted domain names, Is my niche, I see them dropping more each day, That is a sign of a falling market, Imo.

I don't consider making a possible 0.88 on hzxv. com, On ebay, a sale, That is more of a domain dump-LOL....And after ebay fees, they will be negative cash flow on that name.

There are no worthless 3 letter domains. It is not possible to purchase one for under $$$$ and if you did try to throw one away on the grounds it was worthless you would be knocked to the ground in the rush. Many end user companies are based on memorable 3/4 letter combos eg IBM or HSBC. The relative rarity of 3/4 letter names gives them a cachet for potential company presence on the net.

As i was going thru other related threads i largely noticed the following:

Domaining in itself is a business of speculation. People are buying XZH.com, Qualitativeness.com, ZXFJ.com, schools.MD, XFJ.NET, POIJO.com out of speculation. A first look of a end user at these, and he would think otherwise. But these are selling. Why?

Its about supply and demand. Look at this scenario:
1. You buy a real estate in a new and speculative residential area, with a promising future.
2. Some time passes and all the houses are taken.
3. Some people sell theirs for profits to others.
4. Market Value Goes Up.
5. Lesser People Sell their Houses as most start developing them as their residence.
6. Derth of Houses brings up the prices majorly. Now these are too hot and pricy for most.
7. People start looking for near best alternatives.
8. New housing NEARBY comes up with a promising future.

And the cycle continues. The driving factors here are Supply and Demand, Growing economies and Buying Power, "Closest Match" or "As Good" Phenomenon.

When people actually started settling down in the domaining business, LLL.com's would be abundant, alongside some good dictionary names. Then when all good dictionary names were taken, people "Created" a market for LLL.com. Companies followed suit. Now that LLL.com's are "Settling Down" with end users, its time for the near best solution. What better than a VCVC Pronounceable / memorable name ? Dont forget there are a lot of Mid Sized companies growing fast. They need short and sweet domains. There are new companies looking to start, they need domains which match their names. What do they do? Look for domains available and create their names accordingly.

Thats why "Brandable" names came up. Thats why alternatives to the "short" LLL.coms are coming up. When the best names are taken, the second best get included into the "best". 5 years down, we will find people arguing on the "use" of 5 letter .coms, or has it already started ;)

Its all speculation, but thats what drives the market.
