What do you do when someone's interested in buying your domain name?

I have someone who has emailed me saying they are interested in buying a domain name of mine.

I have a figure in mind, but to be honest I don't care if I don't sell it because I was in the process of developing it myself.

What do you write in the email back to them, it's actually on sedo, so they could of made a bid if they wanted to.

Not sure what the next step is.

Beware of shady domain "appraisal" scams! :alien: imho:

Can you copy & paste some of their email approach here? :gl:

Tell them to make an offer. If you had approached them and they were wondering about a price range, it would be different, but there's no need for you to scare them off or cheap out by setting a price range yourself.

Also, there are lots of scams like this, where they often will persuade you to buy an appraisal at their company. Don't.

Good luck!

I had this situation last year with a LLLL.com. I had bought the name for reg-fee speculating on the wide spread use of a new technology. I spend about 10 hours setting up a cheap site and then stopped. 8 months later I had an offer from a guy wanting to buy it for $100. I replied with " I'm not really interested in selling", he replied with " $800". We went back and forth for a couple weeks until I sent $3k as my selling point. A couple months later he came back to me with a strong offer and we closed the deal.

The first thing you should do is use your domaining resources to find out more about your buyer. If there is money there you should hold out for a fair price. I'm not one to hold my names for ransom, but if it is a name that you have real interest in developing you should be compensated for letting it go.

good luck
Kerry

here you go
-------------------
I may be interested in getting picknstick.com Is it forsale and dose it cost much?
-----------------------------------

If it's a scam, it doesn't matter, because I will just develop it. I like the name and really was in the middle of developing the site into a "kids" game site.

I'm wont be getting any appraisals, so no worries there.

I've actually had someone interested in this site name before, this one.

How do I find out about the potential buyer? I did a google search of "his/her name", there was something to do with a company, but I don't know if it was them or not.

Unless the email address gives you something you don't know who you are dealing with.

yes well the email address says "the name" but it could be made-up as it's with a hotmail/gmail account

Dear ______,

Thanks for your interest in _______.com.

I have been working on a plan to develop a web site for this domain, but I may reconsider. Please feel free to forward an offer.

To give you a few points of reference, below are five similar domains that have sold with the transactions publicly reported at DNJournal.com (http://www.dnjournal.com/).

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

I will only consider selling if the offer is within a range similar to prior comparable sales.

Thanks again for your interest,

you can say that you have plan to develop, and don't want to sell unless a substantial amount is offered.
