Website/phone service interaction

I'm looking for suggestions on how to approach a certain programming issue which I probably won't do a stellar job of explaining.

I need to allow people to call a phone number, dial an extension, and then have that call result in a request/action on some sort of webpage.

As an example, if you're coming to work, you dial the 800 number, press 1, and then your name shows up on a roster screen in the office, saying you're en route. (this isn't my intended use, just an example)

I'm at a complete loss as to how a phone service can interact with a website/server. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The average cost per minute is $0.03-$0.05, they also offer SMS. If you looking to roll your own version you'll want to look into asterisk, as most of them use the open source software.
