What's the real point of making code valid XHTML?

After spending (wasting?) a whole morning making my website, www.CalculatorOfLove.com into valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional, I trying to find out what I actually achieved.

Well, I guess I could put this link onto my page, but do people really care if a site is valid XHTML?

It is nice to have it valid. Everything will be able to read your content and flow much easier. The page will take less time to load because it doesn't have those behind the scenes errors. You can also be guarenteed that it meets todays standards and your code is up to date. They are branching away from HTML and going to the new standard of XHTML. You can also have a transitional page like mine. Since I use target = "_blank" I had to make it transitional. When I first heard about this XHTML strict stuff I asked the same question. I can tell you that I do web design for the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and they make sure EVERY PAGE is XHTML STRICT. It must be damn important if the University is requiring it. They won't even consider making it live before it is strict!

Hope This Helps,
