So is,
Father's Day
Mother's Day
Easter
Thanksgiving
Christmas
Halloween
and any other holiday we "observe."
Valentines Day does have an origin and isn't made up but we just feel the need to capitalize and profit off of every special occasion.

and include birthdays in that list. I wonder what is to celebrate about being born on a specific day so many years ago...
The only celebration I somewhat participate in is new year's day. The others are either religious or commercial celebrations, and thus not something I take part in. I don't want anything for my birthday or christmas, and also don't spend anything on other people's birthdays etc.
If I like somebody I will let her know without giving presents right at that very day that it feels like "everybody does it, so...". If you really want to surprise your loved one, birthdays and valentine's day etc are the worst possible events because then it is more or less an obligation. To buy the present any other day comes from the heart and comes as a surprise.
And I know many of the celebrations have a story behind them (including Valentine's Day) but
a) this only applies to religious people, which does not include me
b) I doubt that the people back then had any commercial intentions when they started to celebrate the event, the commercial aspect has been added by merchants in more modern times and thus they corrupted the original celebration
