Here is my
personal battle with 1and1, which started in 2004- 2005
I lost:
- Money they charged on my card to renew domains, which i tried to cancel
- Domains which i wanted to keep (by blocking my access to their settings)
- Hostingcompared.com website, which was generating decent income back in 2005 and was #2 in Google. My custom side-by-side comparison website was deleted (my backup was also there, so when they blocked my access i could do nothing). I managed to transfer the domain 1.5 y later)
I have collection agency after me and it affected my credit history.
1and1 endangered my life (well, not really, but who knows) just because i chose 1and1 as my domain registrar.

The problem was that they require cancelation of the domain, which should normally expire (Subsection3.7.4 of ICANN's Registrar Accreditation Agreement). Until the end 2005-early 2006 the ONLY way to cancel domain with 1and1 was through the fax (1 form for 1 domain). I didn't have a fax machine (or printer), and didn't want to bend over for 1and1: i entered the contract online, there was no indication that i need to have access to fax machine in order to get out of the contract (cancelation by phone wasn't allowed). 1and1 doesn't allow removing credit card # from user's profile. Cancellation of credit card doesn't work: 1and1 opens you a "credit line": it you won't pay it back , they will sell it to collection agency.
My only "achievement" so far was that 1and1 introduced domain cancelation online, but still - you have to go and manually cancel.

.US TLD Registrar Neustar Corp. is dirty company as well. I won't provide more information for now, but could friendly recommend you to
STAY AWAY, unless you have something 'personal' against 1and1/Neustar com. You will also need some time, patience and about $127.99, which you have a chance to turn into up to $7500 (in California).
$127.99= $2.99 + $75 (small case court filing) + $50 (to me for info)
(if you think that i am fighting against corporate fraud only to "fraud" you for $50, think again)
