Since the bulk of the regular .TV members left this area to carry on, mostly, with real businesses created through their links with .TV we have been left with a small group of people who are somewhat, unhappy, that .TV even has a place at the table, never mind a space on Namepros.

The dementors, those creatures that suck the life out of everything they meet, don't just exist in Harry Potter books - we have them here too!

So I decided to do some RESEARCH and see if they were correct.

For those unfamiliar with this concept, it is where a person gets accepted facts from public sources and then puts them together to work out certain ideas, plans, possibilities, etc.

I took a look at all the accepted .TV sales I could find on DNJournal for all the years back before December 2008.

I then took a look at what percentage had actually been dropped and were available right now. I chose pre December 2008 names as this would give the names that were sold (mostly on SEDO) time to be held by their new owners and statistically back for at least one renewal period.

According to the doom and gloom merchants (dementors) you would think that EVERYONE was dropping names left right and centre. So I imagined that at least 50% of names would be dropped and available.

Here are the actual figures...

Normal 'regular fee' .TV Names I could find that had been sold and reported on DNJOURNAL

969

Premium .TV Names I could find that had been sold and reported on DNJOURNAL

193

So, roughly 1 in every 6 names sold on SEDO is a PREMIUM (now that's something I didn't know)


I then took the 969 'normal' regular fee names (i left the premiums out as they are technically still owned and only leased out) and checked if they were available.

Guess how many of these horrible 'get rid of them' as quick as you can .TV names were available?

83 - or to put it another way just 8.7%

The four names in bold and red should also now be taken out of the list as I have bought them.

I believe that people should be rewarded for research and will soon put them for sale here at Namepros for just $100 each. Unless I am PM'd first.

8.7% sounds like a stunning figure to me. How many investments can you think of where 8.7% of what got bought was just dumped and with nobody even bothering to pick it up?

At first I thought you were talking about regististrations, not names resold in the aftermarket. Even a 8.7% decline in registrations would be massive.

How hard is it to post the data for the premiums since you've already collected it?

Snoop a lot of these are $100 and under names its not a big deal if dropped 8.7% is no big deal.

I don't see how there is a big difference here whether the price was $50 or $5000. It is a very big step for someone to buy a name at a premium in the aftermarket then just let it drop. It is alot different to registering a name then letting it expire for example.

Personally I thought this was mainly happening with premium names, (bird.tv etc) though clearly it is going a lot further.

Snoop,personally I don't care either way. But I understand buying for $60 and then losing interest in a project. What is $60 if that's a big deal to you then you are entitled to your opinion. Paying $500 or more then I agree that is a goof on the buyer.

It is an intersting thread, it sounds to me like the buyer didn't really have much of a plan, to basically be "window shopping" rather than having particular domains in mind,

"they initally asked about just efamily- then as we talked, they wanted a site to show anybody can be a tv star (via thier video) - i was like, um, how about anybody.tv- where anybody can be a star-
somehow they missed it on the list - they were like, wow, thats perfect! so we talked back and forth for about 2 weeks- it helps that they came in with strong offers-"

I doubt that, I'll take a weeks data from dnjournal in 2008 and see how it compares. Should be several hundred sales.

I've now run data from namebio (since it includes sales at all prices rather than dnjournal which has a cutoff) for a week from 2 years ago, 1st Feb 2008 to 8th Feb 8th for .com domains sold,

Total sample size was 216 names.

Of that 216, the number of dropped and now available names was 5, which was 2.3% of the sample.

I've attached a list of the names,

The available names were,

discountcaravan.com - $119 - Sedo
dvdpicker.com - $199 - Sedo
forex-forextrading.com - $444 Sedo
judyz.com $300 - Afternic
mycash-boost.com - $1500 - TDNAM

As you can see from the list and what is now available their is little correlation between price paid and what was left to drop. Most of the names that dropped were more mid range prices and of the 32 sales under $100, none were available.

Jimbo - nice analysis.

I went through the entire list and, unfortunately, did not find a one that convinced me to pick it up at reg fee! Many have marketability issues that kept me at bay -- i.e., I couldn't see the .tv domain name "selling itself" to the end-user as an obvious must-buy when dangled in front of them for the first time.

A few days have now passed by and it appears that 9 of the list of names printed have been taken by people who read this thread.

Interesting. I would have said the reason most if these had dropped was that they weren't the greatest of names to start off with and were mostly $60 SEDO purchases. Of course, there were some good buys.
