Techniques for new forums

I've been having an extremely hard time getting my new forum off the ground and getting people to join and post.

Who else here has experience with pure forum sites? What advice can you give me to help get signups coming in?

Buy NP$ and offer it for posts + threads in the np$ incentives forum.

1. create contests within the forum
2. at first promote via np$ incentives, http://www.namepros.com/np-incentives/
3. use the mailer to update and put some good stuff on it like mini contest, posting contest, avatar contest, sig contest, etc.
4. promote also via videos put up some short videos about it, upload on youtube with your url on it.

How do link exchanges work for forums? I've only ever done link exchanges with my arcades. Can you explain to me how this works? I've never seen forums doing link exchanging before. :X

be creative.
here's some suggestions;
1. from within the community members itself, of course people who will be joining it from time to time have their own website, request link exchanges with them.

2. from here as well, create a forum/section dedicated only for link exchanges or depending on your forum software, search for "link trading" or "link exchange" mod/add-on for it and install that.

3. np$ incentivize it i say, people will link back or blog your site for mere 10 to 20np$

I was informed about populating content over at v7n, so I setup some Yahoo! rss feeds in various parts of my forum to populate with content that could interest people that see it and spark signups so they can talk about it.

I'll have a look around and see if theres a mod for vbulletin for link exchanges, otherwise I might just create a forum solely for it.

I think I'm going to start a link exchange section of my website, and have a forum solely dedicated to it.

But now I need to find people willing to exchange links with me.
