Tear Jerker: Domain Inquiry

Recently I shed a salty tear for an inquiry...

Initially, the "student" offers $200 for a domain related to payment processing needed for his church...

Didn't pay attention to the story at first, and just responded based on the offer-asking to make a higher one. $200 is not a bad starting point.

This is where it gets sad.... this was his response:

"I couldn't type exactly, my offer $20 If you want to gave it, I am here, if not, this is life, Gods way."

A real tear jerker :'-( The offer gets reduced, and from what it seems, the church will be involved in payment processing!

I have had other inquiries where "students" make offers for "school projects", etc. Or they need the domain for "Arbor Day", bla bla bla. But this one was by far the one that touched me the most.

He might come back again, and will say....

"I couldn't type exactly, my offer $2 and I can go maximum $5".

I actually made an offer as a student before but I offered mid 4-figures. Still didn't get a response... lol

while there are genuine students who are just starting out, I usually just assume that it's a trick to getting a domain on the cheap, but that's me :D

I've had a couple lately like this. Firstly feigning suprise at the price of the domain, then asking for it for cost plus a small commission (later offering $20).

And someone last week saying they were on a shoestring budget (despite the enquirer being on the managment team of a company and owning property) and how it would be good karma for me to give it to them...

I understand people wanting to keep their costs down, and I am always polite, but offering $10 or $20 for something then seeming shocked when someone doesn't grab your 'offer' makes zero sense to me.

Ah, the ol' "student" trick. Just helped a friend close a deal with a "student" buyer who originally offered $200 along with his "student" story and magically had $6k a few days later. Those students...so blessed.

I sold a domain through Sedo to a pastor once :)
The offer was quite generous and accepted.

If he represents a real church, then you may be eligible for a tax deductible deal lol.

Yeah I got one from NY State (I'm in Australia) late last year, claimed he wanted the name for a charity and gave me a sob story saying he could only afford about $180.

Ran Google over his email, ends up he was the owner of the biggest driving school in NY State.

Bye bye.

PS: Sold WTRU.com to the Christian radio station (The Truth Network) in the States for $4490 in 2006. So some of the churches do have dollars to share!

You just have to squeeze it out of them.

Remember: if the church balks at the price - just say: Jesus will reward you a hundredfold

LOL why is it this always happens. Someone uses god to get something cheap. I mean we should already know he cant balance a check book as the almighty or his churches wouldn't need funding every week. Can create a universe but that money stuffs a lil difficult to come by.

True deities would recommend their church to get a Facebook page instead. It's free.

Meanwhile, any cheerleader stories? lol
