I have a great idea, an idea which popped into my head around 10 years ago, and last night I just happened to buy the perfect name off Sedo, which I saw for auction by chance.

A name which I had previously checked for availability... what a coincedence I saw it last night at sedo!

It's mine now and maybe my idea could go further ... but I just do not know where to start.

I am not an inventor by any means, all I have is the idea, an idea which maybe someone could make it a reality, and I could sell it.

Has anyone ever sold an idea before? Is selling an Idea the same as a Patent?

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I can tell you based on my experience (your mileage may vary):

Unless your idea is for a new invention (and that's for another post) your idea will not be worth much (if anything) in the eyes of venture capitalists. If you are one of the lucky few that know an angel investor (someone who has lots of money) you may be able to run your idea by them and get them to invest in your new startup company to produce this idea.

My personal story is that I came up with a new idea to build a site to go against Ebay and others (it's not an auction site and uses some new ideas) but I have not had any luck acquiring investment for it. I do not know any angel investors and it's hard to get funding from venture capitalists unless it's a proven idea that is already making money. I'm still working on the idea when I have time but the level of programming that is required is hard for me (but I keep learning) and I have not been able to find anybody locally that can program on the level I need.

So if you read all that, I wish you good luck and make sure you get everyone to sign a non-disclosure agreement if you tell them your idea.

Depends on the business model

Depends on the business model. If you're business is purely online you could start it yourself and than start to attract some interest.
