Should you be jailed if....

Say you were hired for a job where they would send you to school to get a degree in the field you was hired for. Then after you got the degree and the work place paid for it you quit.

Should you be jailed and/or have to pay the money back to the original company?


I am going somewhere with this so honest answers please....

I dont think you should be jailed. I think the reason you quit should be reviewed. The if its reasonable than let it go, but if theres no good reason the make them pay it back.

of course you would have to pay them back. :/ you would be breaking a contract.

but really it depends on teh stipulations.

you can't go to jail but it's considered contract breach so at the very least the employer should be compensated to the amount of monies spent for your education...

This is the norm with high-profile white collar jobs where the employer agrees to sponsor your MBA (say $70 - $100K) but requires you to stay for another 2 years... If you leave you're in for contract breach and at the very least I'd expect you'll have to pay back the money + interest if they are being really pissed off about it...

i dont really agree on that one. What if there is no contract between them ??

if there is no contract then the company have no right to send you to jail or do anything.

Although I suppose it's possible, I really don't think any company would agree to pay for you to further your education and not have a clause written into the agreement that you would be required to work for them for a specified period of time after you graduate, like maroulis said. That would not be very savvy of the company at all.
I would think that at the very least, you would be required to reimburse the company for their expenses or face a judgement and/or jail time....I'm no legal expert, though.

Thanks for replying all. I got this question after reading the paper the other day.

There was a big article about US Army Reservists going AWOL because they dont believe in the war in Iraq. To me this is theft and I believe they should be jailed or have to pay back for any schooling/training they can use in any non-military job.

What really gets me is the ones who join and then when a war pops up they run saying they didnt join to kill others or to be killed. What do they think the military is for?

Going AWOL will get you a nice federal warrant issued out for your arrest and once they catch you they will transfer you back hand you a punitive discharge and give you a federal conviction that will be a mark that follows you everywhere. Those who join for education and then desert their country should be placed in prison for the rest of their duty years and forever be marked as a traitor to his/her country.

DN Tycoon I agree with you. I didnt start this to say war is right or wrong but to try and figure out why the heck people join the military when they know what it is only to leave when they are called upon to do the job.
