Rollover within a drop down menu?

I was wondering if there was a way to display a rollover (similar to what pops up when you roll over an image with an alt tag) within a drop down menu.

I have an item in one of my drop downs that is much longer than the others, and if I increase the width of the whole menu, it blows out other elements on the page. So I just want to be able to keep it at a fixed width, and if the user rolls over the selection an alt tag (or something similar) will display all the text.

Here is what I am exactly talking about, it is the "basketball" promo box underneath local sports:

bit of a long shot but on each <option> have u tried adding an alt?

cant do much atm since im at college
