Hello all,

An unusual contest; I hope you'll enjoy it!

Type of Contest : Multiple logos for philosophy-themed websites.

Prize : Total Prize Fund $250

Contest End Date & Time : Phase #1, 8pm GMT 12th November 2006; Phase #2, 8pm GMT 19th November 2006; Phase #3, 8pm GMT 26th November 2006.

Size Requirements : Flexible; site will be modified to accommodate the best design. Preferred format is .ai and .jpg.

Color Requirements : Simple combinations (two or three colours max, white background).

General Requirements : Several logos required for sites on topics in philosophy (see additional information). Logos should include the appropriate domain name (e.g. "Philosophy of Religion .info"), and incorporate a domain-specific themed image. The logos for the different sites should be distinct (different colours, themed images), but bear a family resemblance (same font, layout, and size). All entries must be the entrant's own work.

Additional Information : The contest will be in three stages.

Stage #1

This stage will be an open contest following the standard format of this forum. Entrants are asked to submit two designs, one for http://www.philosophyofreligion.info/ and the other for http://www.philosophyofmind.info/.

At the end of this stage, a winner will be selected and awarded $50.

If the quality of entries is sufficiently strong (I'm sure it will be), then we will proceed to stage two.

Stage #2

This stage will be a closed contest. Three qualifiers (I may change this number at my discretion) will be selected based on entries to the first contest. Each will be invited to submit two further designs, one for http://www.theoryofknowledge.info/ and the other for http://www.moralphilosophy.info/.

At the end of this stage, a winner will be selected and awarded a further $50.

Other participants will receive $25 consolation prizes as thanks for their efforts.

Assuming that the quality of the winning entry is satisfactory (again, I'm sure it will be), then the winner will move on to stage three.

Stage #3

This stage will not be a contest. The winner of stage two will be asked to complete the set of logos (producing three more), and will be paid $75 to do so.

Please only enter the contest if you are willing to see it through to the end. Payment will be by PayPal at the end of each stage.

If you have any questions, please ask. I look forward to seeing what you can come up with. :)

Thanks Johan, but I'm looking for something more specifically related to the theme. Please do try again if you're interested.

I appreciate this is a bit tricky as the topic's quite abstract, so to help out with ideas:

A lot of philosophy involves coming up with hypothetical scenarios and working out how theories would deal with them (these are called "thought-experiments"). In each field there are a few famous thought-experiments, which could be incorporated into the logos. Without going into the details, here are some motifs related to specific areas:

Philosophy of Religion:

The comparison of the universe to a watch (both have many complex parts working in harmony).
Can God create a stone so heavy he can't lift it?
God causing the Big Bang
Life after death
God allowing suffering

Philosophy of Mind:

Zombies
An actor pretending to be in pain.
A beetle in a box
Artificial intelligence
A man speaking Chinese from a phrase book.

Perhaps incorporating one or more of these motifs into the logo the way Google does for its holiday logos (preferably without being too cartoony) might be a way to go?

Hope that helps. If I think of any more motifs then I'll come back and post them.

I'm interested in it but I'm alittle confused in what you want, mabye I'm just not getting it but if you could be mor specfic like one idea or whatever. Also i do my logos in flash is that a problem, because it is vector based.

thanks for you input hopefully I can do something you like.

Thanks for the reply, Ami.

ar15tac: I'd like the first two of a series of logos. Each logo should contain the appropriate url (e.g. PhilosophyofReligion.info, PhilosophyofMind.info) against a white background. Each logo should use the same font. Each should also contain one or more themed graphics, unique to that logo. For some ideas for appropriate themed graphics, see my second post. Ideally, I'd like the finished logos in .ai and .jpg format, but on consideration can be flexible about this. I hope that helps. If not, let me know, and I'll try explaining again.

I was just wondering if you'd except entries which aren't vector, or rescalable?

Carlitos: Vector preferred, not essential. Please go ahead and enter.

To everyone:

**Entrants should feel free to enter one design, before working on the second if the first is along the lines I'm looking for.**

morsetech: I'd like the words "Philosophy of Religion .info", against a white background. Perhaps in #283C64, though colours are flexible. Then add at least one graphic representing the theme (e.g. something representing life after death, or something capturing the similarities between the regular orbits of the planets and the order in the cogs and springs inside an old-fashioned watch, or God trying to lift a really heavy rock, or just the Big Bang).

I'd also like a design done with "Philosophy of Mind .info" (perhaps in #3C6464 but other colours are fine), also against a white background. Same font, same layout, different graphic (perhaps a zombie, perhaps an actor pretending to be in pain, perhaps a beetle crawling out of a box).

Start with just one of the logos, and I'll let you know if you're on the right lines.

Cheers,

Akrasia

Ami: Thanks so much for the entry. The more I look at these, the more I like them. I'd certainly be happy to use the Mind entry as is. I'm less keen on the image for the Religion entry, partly because the site isn't about the specifics of different religions so much as a generic concept of God. Good work, though. With things having been so quiet, I'm relieved to see some action in this thread at last! An excellent start.
