[Here's the entire email message for anyone interested.]

Dear Customer,

Over the past 36 hours we have experienced intermittent disruptions to our services as a result of a distributed denial of service issue - an intentionally malicious flooding of our systems from various points across the internet. Your services may have been affected. All of our technical resources are focused on restoring and maintaining our services.

Customer satisfaction is our top priority at Register.com, and we wanted to be in touch to keep you up to date and apologize for any inconvenience it is causing you or your business. As always, if you have any questions or need any assistance please call us at 1-888-734-4783. Although this service disruption has caused higher call volume, our customer service team is working diligently to get to calls as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your patience.

[Update]

Dear Greg,

Earlier today we communicated to you we were experiencing intermittent service disruptions as a result of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack – an intentionally malicious flooding of our systems from various points across the internet.

We want to update you on where things stand.

Services have been restored for most of our customers including hosting and email. However for some of our customers, services are not fully restored. We know this is unacceptable.

We are using all available means to restore services to every one of our customers and halt this criminal attack on our business and our customers’ business. We are working round the clock to make that happen.

We are committed to updating you in as timely manner as possible, please check your inbox or our website for additional updates.

Thank you for your patience.

Go Daddy, NameCheap and a few Europe-based registrars charge lower, got
hit with DDOS attacks the past couple of years, yet they didn't resolve them
immediately. Each of them took a few days to fix everything up.

Goes to show any registrar, or any online service provider, can be a target,
regardless of how much they charge for their services.

For renewals, you CAN negotiate domain price with register.com.

Just call customer service and hint about transferring your domain out.

:)

I suspect the 4/1 worm had something to do with the attacks.

Just keep checking your Whois and if anything is out of order, call customer service. They seem pretty helpful.

I had the opportunity to register a domain for free at register.com and I just didn't bother.
You're supposed to call them if you need to get the auth code. Waste of time.
If you insist you can get the auth code to the admin contact E-mail, depending on which rep you're dealing with...

DDOS has nothing to do with compromised data, so nobody should fear stolen domains over this.

The bot nets to do this are out there 24/7/365. A new big virus really isn't necessary. The way it works is someone gets a trojan onto tons of computers, and then uses them to send spam, do DDOS attacks or rent access to the bot net to someone who wants to do this sort of stuff.

Wonder how do they survive with such kind of pricing and the best part is there are people to buy at such a price :)

Dear Greg,

As we previously communicated, Register.com has been experiencing intermittent service disruptions as a result of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

We want to update you on where things stand.

As of now, all web services are operational. If you are experiencing any issues please call 1-888-734-4783. We have support teams standing by to respond immediately.

Please note we are not discounting the possibility of an escalated DDoS attack. We are taking every possible precaution to protect our infrastructure and our customers. In response we have:

- Deployed counter-measures to mitigate the attack and added capacity across the company’s network
- Setup special channels with major ISPs to re-enable customers’ services
- Isolated the profile of the attack through forensic data analysis
- Engaged the FBI and The Department of Homeland Security

We promise to update you if there is any change to the situation.

Throughout this attack we have received incredible support from our customers and want to thank you for your understanding and continued loyalty. We recognize these attacks create significant hardships for our customers and will continue to work to maintain and earn your trust.

Fairly Expensive!! Dude that is way too expensive.. I believe they are just gonna be like EST Domains.. The only difference being they went bankrupt due to low Domain Pricing, these guys will go bankrupt just paying ICANN fees.. hehehe.. That is gonna be fun to watch :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

In addition to the HUGE DOS failure of Register.com which lasted for several days and hurt my business tremendously -- my email access is down. I noticed it yesterday Aprul 14th, complained to Larry Kutscher CEO of Register.com. Someone called and left a voicemail indicating "they were aware of the issue and are working ont it." TODAY, April 15th -- the SAME PROBLEM! I emailed Mr Kutscher again and now they have a notice when you try to log in to your email service saying they are doing "maintenance"!!!!!

Register.com what's the real deal??
