I purchased the name several years ago when I sensed that in certain areas of the country where large groups of people work at night or are up creating (as in Palo Alto/Santa Clara) or around huge college campuses where kids often party or study through the night, there would be a demand for businesses to support people up and about when all else is closed, e.g. coffee shops, office supply, drug stores, restaurants, etc. I admit the idea hasn't caught on in too many places, but I thought it would a greater trend than it is. Also the Chicago Tribune has a section called Redeye which was started after I chose this name.
