I was in the bidding pool for please[dot]info.

I set my proxy price at $127.00. I didn't want to go any higher for a .info domain, so when I saw that I was outbid ($300.00), I figured that was the end of it.

Life goes on.

Today I get an email from Pool that I had won the domain (WTF?). Sure enough, I logged onto my account to see that I had been billed, and my info already appears in WHOIS.

I'm not complaining, but what happened here?

Deadbeat bidder or bidders?

Mistake?

Must have been more than one deadbeat bidder, given the bid jumped from $127.00 to 300.00.

???

It may have been an issue with Proxy bidding. I dont recall how Pool works - but I know in somecases there is no proxy bid - people just put their high bid in.

Yes, Pool has Proxy bidding. After I put my top bid in, my bid was $111.00 for a while.

Well, it's a mystery.

Thanks, Spade.

Repped.

I often wonder with some of these places if they don't rig up bids on purpose...

Thanks,

So you don't think I overpaid at $127?

The TLD gave me serious pause, but "please" is a good keyword, over 2,300,000,000 Google. And sometimes infos go for a lot.

Tight, I need to do a little more research on this domain (I didn't expect to win it), but thanks.

This is the first common one-word domain that I own that doesn't have an "s," "es," "ed," "ly," or "ing" at the end.

:bingo:

An Idea for This Domain--Your Thoughts?

*

I have been brainstorming about this domain and trying to figure out how to make the weak .info into a plus instead of a hindrance.

At first, I thought about an etiquette site for the tech age, but then that feels a bit too limiting. And it looks as though Emily Post has covered that subject pretty well.

Then I got to thinking about a general advice site, something called "Please: Information and Advice for the Technological Age."

That still feels a bit clunky, though.

Maybe more like "Please: Information and Advice."

Any thoughts or advice of your own?

Thanks!

A different auction house secured 3 domains from the drops. Nothing no auctions... Then a couple of weeks later we were really surprised to find out we had apparently won one of the three names and someone else had won the other two!

This happened to me once. I suspect what happened is that two or more bidders backordered at the same price, but that no one upped the bid. (This was in the day when the bidder list wasn't transparent, so this is just a guess.)

I happened to be the first to place the backorder, so I got the domain. At least that's my best guess.

I suspect that's what happened to you. There may have been an auction, but if you were first/top bidder, you might not get the message. Doesn't explain why you didn't get the auction notice before the the other two bidders won, though.

Basically namejet encourages shill bidding. Anyone can bid up anything, if they dont want it, all that happens is that they're billed $10.

Not a platform i'd be comfortable bidding at, so never have seriously. I did bid on one domain kabir-com - first time it closed at $1000+, next time at $360 - whois didn't change either time, somehow its changed a little while back. Smells to high heaven if you ask me.

For all you know, the next highest 'valid' bid to yours might have been $60... but i think you got a bargain, in spite of all the shenanigans.

I completely agree. What do they have to lose. The domain industry is similar to the mafia, in my opinion.

I have always felt a little hinky about NameJet; something about their TOS turned me off (can't remember what, though), so I never signed up.

Evidently, when an "invalid" bid is place at Pool (I can't say any more here), the domain goes to the next highest bidder, at least in this case.

I wonder, though: had I upped my bid past the the invalid high bid, would I have paid the higher amount? (This is why it's important to set an absolute top bid and stick with it.)

I must say that my past dealings with Pool have been good; I once received a generous refund from them due to a misunderstanding (on my part). I am very impressed with their customer service.

I now have redirected please.info to a blog, although there's not much on it yet. I'll add ads later when there is more content. I just wanted to get out of someone else's parking hell.

This is not a domain that will do well on a parking page.

I'm certain you would have paid whatever your maximum bid regardless of when the shill bidding started.

Great name! Keeping? Sell/Trade... :guilty:

Keeping, unless the right offer comes along.
