I usually get that 24 hours series.

Whenever I want to learn a language I buy that Learn THIS THAT in 24 hours.

Usually I just read it once without thinking in between. After it is read I think for some hours and till now I have no need to go and read it once again. So the trick is working for me.

Here is the link for PHP book http://www.amazon.com/Sams-Teach-Yourself-PHP-Hours/dp/0672323117

You might be able to find more topics in same series.

Agree with Nick - the SAMS series is great for getting up to speed quickly and written simply enough that just about anyone can follow. They have a book on practically everything.

Don't go crazy buying books all at once or you'll overwhelm yourself. Start with a good (x)html book and something on CSS. (There are also some great tutorials online.) Get comfortable in those first, then start on server side programming (PHP, et al.), databases (Mysql, MSSql ...) AJAX ...

HTML and CSS are the cornerstones to a web page. With them, you can create a web page and present it. So you should definitely start there. PHP is a server side extension of HTML that will further enhance a page, but if you are just starting out, HTML is the best place to start. Also you might want to look up what resources are available online (in the form of HTML tutorials, etc) rather than buying a bunch of books.

Personally I would suggest going to your local library or book shop and flicking through some books.

If you dont have a feel for the way the author has written the book or you dont like the way it is presented you will not learn much. Different people learn in different ways.

Also as has been suggested learn html and css first once you have the basic knowledge behind you start looking at php and mysql. Javascript isnt essential but can help as well.

html and css are not programnming languages but rather markup languages etc
