This must be a very recent development, because I have registered other .orgs some weeks ago, which accepeted the .co.uk format email address.
Well, the proof is in the pudding a sthey say, so in theory, all should be fine in around 24 hours.

It took a while for a response from PIR but here it is

Dear Jim,
Thank you for contacting the Public Interest Registry. I have consulted our technical department and they have responded that it appears that a contact from the .co.uk is still allowed.
