How long is everyone's password? My passwords are usually 8+ mixed characters, however I just changed the root password on both my computers to a 32 character alphanumeric password (it is an MD5 hash).

Depends where the password is at. At work we have to have an Alpha Numeric Case sensitive password above 25 characters (HP). At home and other websites usually 8-16 characters works for me.

One service I use recently required all of its users to change our passwords, and had one of those real-time "how secure is it" scripts running as you typed. I ended up using numbers, non-alphabet characters, misspellings, the works, just to get the darn thing to say "Super Secure". Roboform has a nice internal password generator that's nice to use, hopefully sxipper will implement that soon.

29 characters of seemingly-random numbers and symbols. I bought a magstripe reader off eBay for 99p ($2) and now I can just effortlessly swipe in an uncrackable password from some unimportant card in my wallet. It even sends an "enter" keystroke to it so I don't even need to hit OK.

Problem is that I can't use it for any important passwords - I keep losing the card.

My personal passwords tend to be randomly typed data of varying lengths.

Just a word of caution. Be sure not to give too muc information about password etc.

No point giving people clues on how to hack your websites or accounts.

Why do you have to tell everyone? Thought it was a secret. :|

I have a slew of passwords I use. Some extremely complex...some simple. I also change my password on various sites regularly. I use the full spectrum of alphanumeric and even some characters '&' for example. I print out a password list so I don't forget it.

I can't stress enough how important it is not to use dictionary terms for a password especially ones whose length is 7 characters or less. Also don't use personal information like birthdays, pet names, or kids info. Just create something very random.

Mine range from 8 to 12 characters long & is a mix of numbers & letters. Can't make ot too easy for people to remember. :)

One company I use to work for I ran a dictionary password scan. Which checked for people using password that where super easy to guess. 30% of people in the company used 'password' as there password. 10% used days, months, seasons as there password and about 20% used names.

In total only about 20% were even half secure.

The admin password they used when building the servers was PassworD (capital P and D) - It was supposed to be changed when it went live, but never was.

does it make sense to have password longer than 8 chars ?
If i remember right some systems let you choose longer pass,
but take only first 8 chars for check.
