I just called 1and1, and this is what they told me. They transfer to other registrars and also to other 1and1 accounts. You can't just open a 1and1 account without buying one of their services first. BUT....they do tranfers to other registrars for free All you need is a account with any other registrar, and I'll unlock the name. You will then request the name, and I'll confirm for you. It is free from 1and1, unless your registrar charges you a fee to acquire the name.
