I have posted this before in one thread, but I think this is unique subject and we should discuss on this..

Currently it's my imagination but may happen in future.. Companies will start their own registry to deal with customers..

Just like E-mail Id or sub domains, they will use the registry.

example - Google

portal.google
Search.google
mail.google
blogger.google
webmaster.google
maps.google
android.google
sales.google
submit.google
crawl.google
plus.google
archive.google
support.google
domains.google
security.google
contact.google

Can all registry operators restrict the domain registration just like .us .eu etc?? So in above case google will keep all rights to register domain. If this happens, this will kill domaining..!! what you guys think ?? :rolleyes:O.o

If they got a budget of 185k and a little less per year, sure they could.

Am I going to remember pepsi.com/contest or contest.pepsi?

Unreal reality within the foreseeable future of domain names.

Not a chance. It's brand before model. It's not the jbutterfly.htc, it's the HTC J Butterfly.

I believe Audi applied as well, it's the Audi R8, not r8.audi.

Google may give preference to brand/product associated gTLDs over let's say ecommerce sites.

With that being said though, getting a gTLD for an established brand is costly in 2 ways: application/renewal fees and marketing the "new" brand.

Pointless for these companies to do, but 185k is pennies to them.

They probably had a good sales team at ICANN pitching the idea of securing your .company name.

Second thought, wonder if they got tax write offs...

I could see major sports franchises doing this, .nfl, .mlb, .nba .... it would be a way to keep the registrations of new players out of the hands of domainers, standardize the web sites for all the teams, etc.

They don't have to spend any money to anything other than their own customer base. Not to anyone wanting to register a .BRAND domain. The advantage to these companies of having their own .BRAND is that they control the space. No cyber-squatting. I can see huge advantages to .HSBC for example. UK.HSBC for example is a much easier to remember than what they use now. So new customers don't need to do a Google Search to find them. Also they can drill down easily, like NEWCASTLE.HSBC, or even more locally to HACKNEY.HSBC. And that's not even covering their products, like SAVINGS.HSBC, INSURANCE.HSBC, etc, etc. I think these principals apply to all these companies who have applied for their own brand. But I do get your argument about R8.AUDI. But that is not a major shift in thinking for customers once they know the company has their own .BRAND. In any case they can always redirect their existing websites to the new brand. I think R8.AUDI is easier to remember and type than AUDI.COM/R8/. Just IMHO.

.

many options, if you control the whole TLD

new.audi
2015.audi
warranty.audi
colors.audi
mileage.audi
tv.audi
uk.audi
usa.audi

etc.

For big companies, $1M/year is peanuts. $1M after including operating costs, specially if they are getting tax write off for free services.

A company could give out fancy name sub-domains with a WYSIWYG website builder based on something like weebly.com to everyone who purchases a product or service. A brand fanboy would be very happy posting their selfies and videos at their very own free website like my-first-name.product.brand. That is lot of free marketing and page rank for $1M/year.

Lot of scope for just $185K

Haven't checked, but my guess is .selfie is coming and I would not be surprised if sites like weebly are bought out now. Good time to start a free website builder service. :D

I believe social networks would work best for this "branding" purpose as a URL shortener (besides fb.com of course, but a gTLD may be more memorable in a sense once it catches on and they redirect fb.com/user to user.facebook).

Instead of fb.com/user, user.facebook or the longer and more confusing LinkedIn pages, user.linkedin. I could see those spreading and working if they are applied for and accepted.

However, as I own my initials in the .net, it is my "brand". I could redirect djw/fb -> page, djw/linkedin -> profile (obviously keeping them on my .net so they can easily navigate back to my main site since most computer users can't even use a mouse anymore). This would be no use to me, but to an average social network user, it may be the next best thing since sliced bread to tell their friends to go to davidwalker.facebook.

@DNVantage As far as .selfie, I see it has a very limited purpose. Just like .pics, .photo, .photography. There can only be 1 selfie (I'm sure there will be a swarm of common first and last names registered in the hopes that a domainer can go through the white pages for a potential end user), which somewhat fits into my social network example, user.selfie who are more narcissistic.

I couldn't see an average person buying all .socialnetworks for their use. Rather quite possibly a .social gTLD (or any other "fitting" g/cc/TLD and redirecting to save money (if .com/.net/.org/.co/.me/.name/.xyz aren't available for registration).

Either way, this will not end domaining. It will however educate end users that there are gTLD's and may speed up the process of creating an aftermarket, which will be good for all the .xyz hoarders (I mean, gTLD speculators trying to catch a .com wave).
