Hi guys!

I found a domain called schoad.com in another forum. The thread starter said
that if you type anything before the domain (i.e. a, b, c, 1, 2, 3, dumb, idiot,
etc.), it'll pull up search engine results bearing whatever you input and display
the whole thing in the locator bar as a "subdomain".

I typed "davezan" before the domain in the locator bar, then it gave search
engine results which bears my name. If I type the same thing in the white box
to search, it'll just return results like a regular search engine.

What's the purpose of this? How is this accomplished?

Just a script... no point really.

Yea, its a script, kinda like the old wasarrested.com sites.

It may just be a "Wildcard" Redirect - you can usually place a "*" as your Hostname on Framing or redirect in your Domain CP. Then place a refering link script in your index to see where the visitor came from - you can then strip everything from the url except the "wildcard" portion and just forward/redirect them to that keyword search.

Is that confusing enough ?

Yep, you're partially right. It could vey well be a combination of Wildcarded DNS and mod_rewrite. I've been working with Wildcarded DNS recently, its very interesting.

If you want to find out more about mod_rewrite and what it does, check out these links (in addition to the one above)

Some sites that Explain mod_rewrite:

http://www.doriat.com/
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/misc/rewriteguide.html <-Complex
http://www.apacheref.com/ref/mod_rewrite.html

Some forums where you can ask questions and for help:
http://forum.modrewrite.com/
http://mod-rewrite.com/forum/

A simple mod_rewrite generator:
http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/mod_rewrite-rewriterule-generator.shtml

Here are some Wildcarded DNS Resources:
http://photomatt.net/2003/10/10/wildcard-dns-and-sub-domains/ <-Really Good
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildcard_DNS_record
http://jonroig.com/freecode/DNSwildcard/

Well, hope that gets you headed in the right direction if you ever want to do something with that.

Best of luck
