I am fortunate enough have broadband, but occasionally if I am at a client site and they only have dialup, if I try to visit NamePros, it's a huge hassle.
While the board looks wonderful and has awesome features, the downside is huge page sizes, rarely under 80k (NOT including images!)
I manage a website with similar size problems and we solved this issue nicely by installing mod_gzip
Here's an example for the page:
http://www.namepros.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=20
native page size: 72430 bytes
download times
28.8 dialup 35.4 seconds <--
56k dialup 17.7 seconds
10k/sec dsl 7.1 seconds
50k/sec dsl 1.4 seconds
mod_gzip level 5 (default setting, barely any extra cpu load)
page size: 9862 bytes !!!! ( 86.4% reduction)
download times:
28.8 dialup 4.8 seconds
56k dialup 2.4 seconds <--- whew, great relief!
10k/sec dsl 1.0 second!
50k/sec dsl 0.2 seconds <---- whoa!
As a huge bonus, this will cut your server bandwidth bill by AT LEAST a third, sometimes as much has half.
