Nameservers - An idiots guide

I'm having a little trouble. Theres one part of the domain game that Ive never really understood - nameservers.

I have domains in my Registerfly account. However, for one example, I look at the nameservers listed and it is:

DNS #1: NS1.FABULOUS.COM
DNS #2: NS2.FABULOUS.COM

The domain example above is a domain which I recently bought and had pushed into my account.

What does this mean, and what downsides are there to keeping it as this, or advantages of using RegisterFly's own nameservers.

I'm no expert, but those are the nameservers for people who park their domains with the company: Fabulous. This gives the company the power to move your domain around and before you had this name pushed into your account, the previous owner was making money parking it with Fabulous.

There's no real harm in keeping it as that unless you want me to make money through parking your name and if so, find a company such as DomainSponser, DomainHop, Afternic, Sedo, Etc. and change the DNS settings for those places along with making an account with them, etc.

I know that it is for people who use Fabulous, what I dont understand is what the nameserver actually does. CAN fabulous move my name because I am using their nameserver? I need back-to-basics help here! :p

Well yeah they can move your domain around, that's how DomainSponser is able to make it so that when someone types in www.candy.com, they enter into that generic site where the owner, Rich Schwartz makes money off your clicks. Basically, it gives the company the powers of redirection.

You are poiting your domain to there servers, this means they can control where your domain points to and the mx entries etc.. They cannot take the domain of you however.

That's correct. In basic terms, you give them the power to redirect your site and nothing more. You still control the domain and can easily remove their power. Hope that helps.

Try this:

www.Computer.HowStuffWorks.com/dns1.htm

You can change your nameservers, if you want to park them somewhere else, and make some PPC money. For example, my domains (95%), are registered at www.Registerfly.com, but I have my nameservers pointed to www.Sedo.com. You just go to change dns and type in:
Ns1.SedoParking.com
Ns2.SedoParking.com

Exactly

The fact that this domain had fabulous.com nameservers set simply means that it's past owner was using our services and when the domain was transferred you did not change them.

Hopefully, by adding the name to your own Fabulous Parking account, the stats and earnings would transfer over to you, although the DNS would remain the same. After a couple of days, I would double check to make sure that stats are showing up in your account.
