To be honest, domain flipping/investing is not an easy field. It requires a lot of patience and luck too and some investment. The investment may bring good dividends or may not. If you invest in very good domain names, you may get some profit but no one can tell when. No one can say with confidence that you would earn 15% or earn enough to go on a trip in 5 years. Its very unpredictable.
You need to first of all get lot of knowledge about domains and domain flipping and how it works and then invest in a couple of good domains and see what happens.
If you are planning for 5 years, it would be better to invest in some good stocks instead of relying on domain investing.

I'm a bit of a newbie and from my other experiences in life I have 3 answers re: "What is this industry"?: 1st it's like the U.S. physical real estate industry/market where people see lots, homes buildings etc... 2nd: It seems similar to the U.S. wall street stock market and I keep hearing about wall street investing in the global domain industry. 3rd, it's an opp for some who are called to use the industry for business and making money that does good in the world- makes the world better, makes lives better.

Helen, start with a clear strategy. This is a business, not a hobby. Make a business plan, doesn't need to be 20 pages but use an online template and stick to your plan. Some ideas:

• What is your exact budget? Remember each domain costs a year's registration, plus privacy (if desired), plus tax, plus hosting and SSL if you develop a website on the domain.
• What is the exact amount you need to make (profit) and on what date?
• Do you have a domain-buying checklist? This is vital. There are many things to look for (and avoid)
• List the main research sources (ie WIPO trademark search, WayBack Machine, ExpiredDomains, AcronymFinder, etc)
• Use the free domain valuation websites, but only as a guide! If GoDaddy says the domain is worth $10,000 it probably has value, but probably not $10,000. These sites are fully-automated and machines get it wrong. The domain industry changes every second.
  
• Set up Google Alerts for news related to your niche, when a new theme hits your niche that's the time to pounce!
  
• Ask questions/search the NP archive - the community here is extremely knowledgeable and diverse. But don't be put off if nobody answers your question.

I focus on .com's in one specific niche (in fact one specific word). Suggest you choose something that won't go out of fashion, ie. fashion, water, hotels, food, gold, sport, etc. Vaping was popular for a while (I vaped daily), then people (reportedly) started dying from vaping and I imagine the industry will take a nosedive - and the domains will lose value. Water won't lose value, neither with food, sport, gold, etc.

Last of all, make notes. Keep learning and read, read, read. Good luck!

I can't. I saw/read that Wall St. was investing in the INDUSTRY BY WAY OF making its presence known. I could have been clearer because what I said could be interpreted as Wall St. investing in the industry's domain NAMES. You may want to keep aware of news items in: https://www.dnjournal.com as they seems to be supported by Wall St. and Wall St. media like Bloomberg. Did this help?
