Microsoft Buys Internet Security Firm

United Press International 02/09/2005

Microsoft is buying a small New York security software company that was preparing to go public this year.

Analysts estimate Microsoft will pay at least $186 million for Sybari, the value of its shares at their proposed $16 maximum offering price, the Seattle Times reports.

After the deal is finalized, Microsoft will sell business customers standalone security products based on Sybari technology and also based on GeCAD, a Romanian antivirus-software company it bought in 2003, said Mike Nash, vice president of Microsoft's security and business unit.

About 10,000 companies and government agencies, including the Pentagon and the FBI, use Sybari products to protect their e-mail systems from worms, spam and viruses.

D-: Can you say "Bigger Brother"

Yup. As an independent company, they were probably doing great things. Now that it's a stepchild of MS, it will be treated as such.

Policy at MS has been, is, and will be for the immediate future: "search and destroy" -- or "acquire what you desire" --

Sybari is a very good company. We had the opportunity to evaluate it an early stage. Good contracts, especially with the govt. And very good IP.

Received an offer it couldn't refuse. MS has a nice war chest, as say in USA, and the amount paid, hybrid of cash/stock, is miniscule for the big giant.

Microsoft is just going to make things worse. In the next Windows we will probably be only able to use that software.
