was hoping to hear some opinions on these from some US NP-ers ...

To be honest I think these are unfortunate domain hacks...
Many if not most Americans know what .ca stands for (presumably). Californians would definitely not want to be confused with the canucks

I'm afraid this is the wrong TLD for these domains. Of course you can develop and move along but you still start with a handicap. IMO they are worth reg fee at best.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I, of course, do not think that these are unfortunate hacks. Are you saying that most americans think of tuvalo when they see .tv? or that they 'should'? I think it is a very serendipitous fact that .ca will work for canada and california, absolutely not 'unfortunate'.

And by the way, every major californian city . ca, is gone.

The Internet 'market' will tell us what a extension really means, no matter what we think or want it to mean.

I will be developing malibubeach.ca very quickly, so we will see. (and by the way, there is absolutely no other malibubeach site currently developed.)

but I do thank you for the input ...

Munkybrain,

You definelty are thinking outside the box.

Like you say that will be a benefit to you as no domains can be had for the popular resort. Easily brandable and since you are intending on making a site , you will have no problems.

Like I own californiarealestate.la.

Someone here might say to me.. well its would be a nice name if it was .com. Sure and your wallet would have to be big too for a name like that.

I am happy woth the LA market as it in itself is huge. Real estate in just the Los Angeles market is huge, probably worth more than my whole State, ( Wa.).

Its all relative. If you can't have the whole pie, what the hell is wrong with a nice slice?

You are correct, most Americans will not relate .tv to Tuvalu but these two TLDs do not compare. For instance .ca is very popular within Canada and many if not most Americans would know that .ca is indeed the TLD for Canada...
My point is, you can afford to be creative and 'think outside the box' with exotic TLDs like .la .ms because few people know what they stand for... however .ca is not an exotic TLD and it is well recognized even beyond the Canadian borders. That's the difference. The more popular .ca gets the more your domain will look odd IMO so I find it risky to brand around .ca.
If you registered the names for development and are happy with them then all is fine :)

Not many people think that broad. .ca means whatever they, the public, thinks it means. .ca may be popular in Canada but I assure you most americans still don't know there is such thing as a country code. Country codes tend to be popular for the country that owns, like Canadians love .ca and Chinese love .cn but majority of americans don't know the difference. Some food for thought.

By the way I think these are great catches and no one will confuse them with anything Canadian.

hanging at Malibu

Yes Acronym makes a very good point. Domainers might know these extensions, but most folks do not.

These are top domains and not for a hopeful market either. For branding or developing a website, these domains speak to a certain audience. Call it "with it crowd", "todays culture", "celeb style" or "posh chic" we are not talking poor folks.

The crowd that hangs at Malibu will love this name and so will other "with it people".

I wish I had regged them.

thanks for the comments.

I agree that they 'look good' for a valuable california market. who from malibu beach, pacific grove or hermosa beach wouldn't want joe@malibubeach*ca, or amy@pacificgrove*ca as an email address? and as goodkarmaco mentioned all are 'high end' locations w/ multi-million dollar homes, rich populations, tourism, etc. I think CA is far more common and popular as an acronym for california than as a canadian tld.

I am going to develop quite quickly w/ these, and will update the thread as they progress ...

thanks again for all of the well thought out comments.
