Is Anyone Using VOIP?
I know that it stands for "Voice Internet Protocol", you need a service provider and a special modem to plug your phone into your computer, you send out a "voice packet" via the internet, it is currently unregulated and supposedly much cheaper than standard phone service. My son has an business where he is out of the country for extended periods, and I am looking into it to save primarily on international calls. Anybody using it or considering using it??

I'm interested.
2 questions.
Are there restrictions in some states? For instance, I heard that Wisconsin was not accepting VOIP from California providers (if that makes sense.)

Is there a way to interface a cell phone w/ the modem, or does it require a land line? ->Better question- What is the physical set-up? What equipment is needed? Does it work w/ a cable modem?

I dont know anything about any resctrictions...i know vonage is available in both wisconsin and california...On the modem there are connections for regular phone lines...there might be a way to use it with cell phones but im not sure...there are a few forums that people discuss hacks and stuff like that so they might have some info on it.

No problem...i was thinking and the only thing i could think of is that you could have the calls forwarded to your cell phone...

If anyone else is interested in VOIP, found a pretty good primer. You can also navigate to several other related articles from here->PCWorld_VOIP

I'm not sure about private VOIP providers in the UK but we have just moved into a new office which is completely on the VOIP system and our telephone costs have been slashed completely.

An excellent (and free) service is available at www.skype.com - it is free to call from comp to comp and a small charge a month to call comp to regular phone. A few of my friends use it and swear by it - I can't use it cos broadband isn't available in my area at the moment.
