Firstly, please be very, very realistic with your appraisal here because I will be the BUYER, not the seller ;)

It's a PR5 site hosting 40,000 shoutboxes at the moment. Alexa of 100,000 and 250,000 backlinks.

Revenue? Let's assume 0 because the shoutboxes are free. But with that kind of numbers I was thinking that maybe it's possible to run advertisments successfully. Honestly, I don't have a business model/plan yet.

How much is the site worth? Please use low, mid and high in addition to your xxx. Thanks.

Hmmm, 250k backlinks is a lot, it's very rare to come accross that. However, backlinks are worthless without Search Engine rankings and traffic. What are they like?

So, does that mean, the site has 40k members?

Alexa's 100,000 so that should give an estimate on traffic and it has top 10 rankings across all major search engines. I don't know if you can consider them as members because they're using it for free and nobody will pay for shoutboxes btw.

But remember to assume revenue is zero after deducting the costs for dedicated hosting. So how much would the rest of the statistics make it worth?

With all due respect, an alexa ranking gives no indication whatsover of traffic. I have had sites before in the top 100k receiving just 30 uniques per day for some reason.

But from what you are saying, I wouldn't sell a site like that at less than $4k.

Seriously? But what's the point if it's zero profit. Btw, the seller just replied and says he wants a minimum of $6k.

The potential of the site is what is worth the money. It has the potential to earn at least $500 per month IMO.

You could introduce small, text adverts onto the boxes and sell ad space on them...and on your main site?

usually sites are worth 12 months of their rev...in that case this site is worthless

hrmm, low xxxx below 35xx , but 6k sounds reasonable, if you find a way to pop ads in the shoutboxes, all 40,000 of em, and each one makes you a minimum of 10 cents a week. thats 208,000 in revenue a year. And this is a conservative estimate, some shoutboxes would make dollars a day, and some would make 10 cents a day, and you have to account for inactive boxes, but 10 cents a week is easy to obtain, so Id buy it if you had a way to put ads across all shout boxes.

I thought about that actually before approaching the guy - was thinking on a line of horizontal scrolling text ad near the top.

However, the numbers seem a bit too good to be true? Plus, he says out of the 40,000 he doesn't know how many of the shoutboxes are active and management is kinda complicated because there's no admin panel. That's a bit of a downer isn't it?!

It sounds kind've fishy to me but if it's legit 6k is pretty low.

It's legit. Hosting is sponsored currently so he couldn't care less about the site.
Traffic comes mostly from blogs and forums in the US. And just in case you didn't read correctly, it's not $6k but $6k MINIMUM. ;)
