How good is .co.in?

This is my first post here and I am fairly new in domaining. I found a strong keyword that is pretty much gone most places but .co.in is available? Is that a decent extension to go with? I mean, it will only cost a few bucks to grab and the keyword is a strong niche word with over 2 million results in google. Just wondering about the strength I guess. Any help is appreciated!

.co.in is used in India by companies, whereas .in is used more for international companies operating in India as well as for its coolness factor, see http://outside.in. In fact I believe that it there are more .co.in sites right now than .in sites, however .in tends to be more popular with domainers because the belief (probably a very good one) is that .in will become much more popular and overtake .co.in. Also .in tends to be more valuable but more people use .co.in in India than .in right now. So if its a good keyword that is business related then go for it. The end user potential in India is definitely there. Just to see how popular .co.in is in India right now wrt .in check out msn.co.in and msn.in

.co.in is nice if you can use the domain for an Indian business.

There are approximately 3,300,000 small companies in India. Most of them DON'T have websites.

And some people say you get more traffic from India on a .co.in than a .in, my experience is otherwise. Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice. I have about 5 dictionary .in domains and wasn't too clear on the .co.in extension importance or true meaning, which you both explained wonderfully. I am not sure how big of a problem my keyword is in India, so I need to do my research on it. Again, it is only $4 so no big risk either, right? Thanks again!

You can check google.co.in and yes you're right at less than $4 its not much risk, only when renewal comes up in a years time. But by then you'd have more than enough time to decide if you should keep, sell, develop or let drop.
