How does Mozilla make money?

I cannot see any way that mozilla are making enough or any money at all. How can they sustain such a large worker base, and pay overheads and stuff?

I must be missing something here, but they don't advertise or anything. Maybe google and yahoo and ppl pay them to get their search engines on the default list, but then again, that can't be getting them enough to pay for everything they have to pay for? Can it?

Mozilla Corp. on Tuesday confirmed that it is taking in millions of dollars from the Firefox browser, but declined to give an exact figure.

In making the disclosure, Mozilla, the for-profit subsidiary of the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, was responding to a report that the company has taken in $72 million, primarily through Google Inc.'s search box on the right-hand corner of the browser.

"The amount isn't accurate but isn't off by an order of magnitude either," Mitchell Baker, chief executive of Mozilla Corp., said in an email from the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego. "Mozilla Corp. doesn't generally discuss the amount of revenue generated or the specific details of our partnership agreements, as these agreements are confidential in nature."

i don't like helping companies that make out that they are doing something to help you and acctually they are in it for the money. What got me was "Mozilla - The for-profit subsidary of the Mozilla Foundation".

And also, I am supposed to be promoting the use of Sixsearch.net and not google. So all of you assume that there are enough people using the google search bar and go and download my firefox plugin http://sixsearch.net and it should appear in the top right hand corner in firefox! :D

I would assume that mozilla also makes money with the adsense accounts. You know how you can put a product button on your site that advertises the mozilla browser for download (with the google toolbar).

i don't understand. You saying that google pay firefox if they ship their browser with google's toolbar already included?

Yeah. With Google toolbar installed you use google eve more exclusively and thus see more ads on google searches, and I assure you google makes there money back.

Can anyone explain to me how Google did money before Adsense???

i don't think they did

they were origionally gonna sell their idea/patented idea to other companies for them to build search engines, but then no-one bought it, and they did it themselves.

Maybe they didn't make money till they thought up adsense.

hmm... i don't know when adsense was introduced, good question though, got me stumped, lol.
